2An International collaboration of leading
scholars and researchers focused on understanding
and developing materials and technologies which
promote sustainable urban regions. The primary
focus is to minimize the negative impacts
associated with surface building materials
which alter the urban climate and the related
economic, social and environmental imperatives of
sustainability.

Who we are
3Why Phoenix, Arizona
Phoenix, Arizona is now the countries 5th largest
city by population and larger than Los Angeles in
geographic extent. Like most of the rapidly
urbanizing regions around the globe, it is
quickly transforming native vegetation into
man-made urban materials. Up to 70 of all urban
surfaces are comprised of engineered materials.

11The Other Auto Pavement
The rhizosphere is impacted by impervious
surfaces and increased temperatures above 40c.
This has the net effect of reducing vegetation
growth and vitality.
