industry
3it was so poorly lit that one could not see
into the dark corners but workers could hear the
scurrying of rats hear them chewing on the meat
and smell the dung they left behind
4- Upton Sinclair at the time he first achieved
muckraking fame.
The Jungle filled with page after page of
nauseating detail researched about the
meat-packing industry was dropped on an
astonished nation in 1906.
5Rumble Over The Jungle
- An instant best-seller Sinclairs book reeked
with the stink of the Chicago stockyards. Dead
rats were shoveled into sausage-grinding
machines bribed inspectors looked the other way
when diseased cows were slaughtered for beef and
filth and guts were swept off the floor and
packaged as potted ham. - The Jungle did as much as any
animal-rights activist of today to turn Americans
into vegetarians. - Within months the -- gagging -- public
demanded sweeping reforms (changes) in the meat
industry.President Theodore Roosevelt was
sickened after reading a copy. He called upon
Congress to pass a law establishing the Food and
Drug Administration and for the first time
setting up federal inspection standards for meat.
6Theodore Roosevelt was elected president. He
loved nature and read the book The Jungle by
Upton Sinclair. This sickened him and fought for
new laws to protect the people. In 1906
Congress passed The Meat Inspection Act and The
Pure Food and Drug Act. President Roosevelt
signed them and they became LAW.
7The Meat Inspection Act of 1906 made sure that
the public was getting better quality food.
8Theodore Roosevelt knew firsthand about
seriously bad food. During the Spanish-American
War he asked one of his Rough Riders why he was
throwing away his canned meat. The soldier said
he didnt like it. Eat it and be a man
Roosevelt ordered. The fellow did so and
promptly vomited. Roosevelt examined the slimy
stringy ration and instantly understood why.
9The Pure Food and Drug Act was passed in 1906.
10Theodore Roosevelt was also a conservationist.
He wanted to protect the environment. Created
national parks and created the Antiquities Act to
protect national monuments.
