Look at these Spanish sentences
  • María da un regalo a su madre.
  • María da un regalo a sus amigos.
  • What is the subject in both Spanish sentences?

  • The verb?
  • da
  • The direct object?
  • Un regalo
  • What are a su madre and a sus amigos?
  • RIGHT! They are indirect objects!

An indirect object indicates to whom or for whom
the action is done.

Now look at these sentences
  • Ella le da un regalo.
  • Ella les da un regalo.
  • She gives her a present.
  • She gives them a present.

Which word has replaced a su madre in the first
sentence? ?le Which word has replaced a sus
amigos in the second sentence? ?les

Le and les are indirect object pronouns. They
stand before the verb and may refer to either
masculine or feminine nouns.
