Title: Nic and Danas Leapfrog Investigation

1
Nic and Danas Leapfrog Investigation
  • Nic and Danas Leapfrog Investigation

2
What Are We Trying to Find?
  • What is the least amount of moves (jumps or
slides) it would take to get the green frogs
where the red frogs are and the red frogs where
    the green frogs are?
  • What if there were more frogs?

3
What is the least amount of moves needed?
  • First thought...how the hell should I know?
  • Next ideaheaps of trial and error.
  • Was convinced that 10 was smallest amount of
    moves needed for 5 squares.
  • That was until we had a break through.. Not even
trying we got it in only 8 moves

4
Data Collected
  • For 3 squares and 1 red frog and 1 green frog 3
    moves.
  • Slide red frog
  • Jump green frog
  • Slide red frog
  • Waalaa!!!!!!!!!!!!!

5
What If There Were More Frogs?
  • More frogs more moves more trial and error.
  • Decided to try 7 squares.
  • Started to get anywhere from 27 moves to 35.
  • Being lazy so tried to get a pattern out of 3
squares, 5 squares found out I didnt have enough
    information to make a pattern.
  • Therefore, back to playing leapfrog.

6
Went for a walk down the garden path
  • Got fixated on the whole slide, jump issue. We
thought it must be a pattern of slides and jumps
    rather than numbers.
  • We were wasting a lot of time repeating
    ourselves.
  • After wasting many trees we gave up on this idea.
  • Then we got an ideaand found not one but two
    number patterns.

7
A Pattern? Uh Oh Which One?
MCS Next number of moves
Moves the move before 5
8
So we found patterns
  • Now what do we do?
  • Which one is correct?
  • Is there a way we can check the answer without
    just sliding and jumping?
  • They are both patterns and they continue on.

9
we couldnt see the forest for the trees!
  • In trying to work out which pattern was right we
completely forgot to look for the least amount
of moves so therefore lock it in Eddy the
    answer is..
  • MOVES THE MOVE BEFORE 5

10
Finally
  • What are the least number of moves needed with 5
    squares? 8 moves
  • What if there were more frogs? You would need
more squares then number of moves simply goes up
as you have seen on the page before (if you were
watching!). You can use the formula we worked so
hard to find, to work out the number of moves.
    MOVES THE MOVE BEFORE 5
