Incorporate Innovative Teaching Strategies
31
Incorporate Innovative Teaching Strategies
  • Initiated in fall 2008 for students in the
  • undergraduate prgram promoted to
  • upper division.
  • Required for RN students when they
  • ???????.
  • Students are taught how to use the software in
    the
  • nursing informatics course.
  • Learning modules in eLearning require use of the
    PDA.

32
Incorporate Innovative Teaching Strategies
  • Graduate faculty and students also use
  • PDAs.
  • Software used by graduate students is
  • different than that used by undergraduate
    students.
  • PDAs are required in the ?????????? course.
  • PDAs are then used by students in all clinical
    courses.

33
Lessons Learned
  • No matter what technology is useit is NOT cheap!
  • Takes a lot of human resources.
  • Requires commitment of university administration.
  • Requires coordination of various departments.
  • Faculty must be flexible.
  • Faculty must be receptive to change.
  • Recently migrated from WebCT to eLearning, which
    is the Blackboard Vista software.

34
Lessons Learned
  • Teaching online is not like teaching in the
    classroom.
  • Teaching an online course is not 9-5.
  • Students expect instant feedback 24/7 and faculty
    must set limits upfront.
  • Pay attention to student workload. Dont overload
    students.

35
Lessons Learned
  • The number of students in an online course must
    be considered.
  • If you have a student who is not participating,
    catch this early.
  • Consider how students who take an incomplete and
finish the course the next semester are calcuated
    into the faculty workload.

36
Lessons Learned
Computerized Testing
SECURITY
  • Set time limits.
  • Make sure that students cannot copy and paste.
  • Block students from accessing the Internet or
    other files.
  • Prevent students from recording test sessions.
