What do I do during breaks?
  • A break is when you break into format/music to
talk, play underwriting, promos, PSAs, etc.
  • While we dont have a standard format for breaks,
we do have guidelines to assist you as you are
learning how to be a dj

27
Break Guidelines
  • A typical break proceeds this way
  • Coming out of music, back announce all music that
was played since the last break
  • Plug/fore announce a few tunes coming up in the
next set of music if youre giving away tickets,
    etc., mention that too!
  • Read Live Copy
  • Play underwriting, promos, PSAs from the
    automation system
  • Use a shotgun or live drop to go back into music

28
Break guidelines
  • Pay attention! Dont let the underwriting,
promos and PSAs play before you talk automation
    system should be in manual
  • Dont forget to ID the station somewhere in your
    patter
  • Music patter should come first--dont make your
    listeners wait for it

29
Back/Fore Announcing
  • One of the biggest gripes radio listeners have is
that announcers dont tell them what songs they
    have just played
  • Tell your listeners what you have just
playedback announcing all songs aired in set
and fore announcing a few artists/songs coming up

30
KTSW Live Copy
  • The Scotts Studios SS32 automation system allows
us to post Live Copy that can be brought up on
    the screen
  • You will read copy at least 4 times during a
    2-hour airshift
  • Pre-read the copy and try to put it in your own
    words
  • Live copy is to be read during all airshifts

31
Program producers
  • You are required to play all recorded promos,
PSAs and underwriting announcements scheduled on
the Scott Studios system during the hours you are
on the air. If you do not know how to do this,
ask the Program Director (Jayce) and he will show
you. If you are new this semester, you will
    learn this during your training.

46
Station Housekeeping
  • Since many visitors come into our station, it is
important to keep the facilities, studios and
offices neat and attractive. Trashy work areas

the area. Please tidy up the control room before
leaving. Return all materials to their proper
    place. Keep it neat!

Pronunciation
  • This area of Texas was settled by people from
various ethnic backgrounds, and each contributed
to what became a culturally rich language of the
region. The original pronunciation of many words
was often distorted by the locals. Some of these
variations of Spanish, German and other ethnic
European names are now the accepted pronunciation
in the area. It is important for any broadcaster
new to a region to learn the local
    pronunciations.

    patently offensive way, sexual conduct
specifically defined by the applicable state law
    and
  • the material, taken as a whole, must lack serious
    literary, artistic, political or scientific
    value.

measured by contemporary community standards for
the broadcast medium, sexual or excretory
