- 1 Laptop, LCD, Smart Board, and corresponding
connector cords - 3 "hurricane" envelopes containing 5 strips of
paper (these 5 strips will be 5 sentences of a
paragraph about hurricanes) - 3 "tsunami" envelopes containing 5 strips of
paper (these 5 strips will be 5 sentences of a
paragraph about tsunamis) - 3 "tornado" envelopes containing 5 strips of
paper (these 5 strips will be 5 sentences of a
paragraph about tornadoes) - 90 copies of the Intro Paragraph handout
- 90 copies of the three five-sentence paragraphs
12Procedure
- 1) Go through the Intro Paragraph notes on the
Smart Board
2) Explain the rules for the ordering and
highlighting activity

- 3) Before I let students open their envelopes, I
told them . . .
4) After about five minutes, I asked a group of
students to come up to the board.

15Lessons Learned
- 1) Students love rearranging strips of paper.
This is a highly effective way of teaching
sentence order.
2) Never knock mnemonics.
16Lessons Learned
- 3) If a group of students are at the Smart Board,
the rest of the students cannot just be watching
them they need to be actively doing something.
4) Unless competition is involved (i.e. Jeopardy,
Matching, or Concentration), most of the period
should not be spent at the Smart Board.
