OVERVIEW OF NATIONAL YOUTH SERVICE VISION
  • National Youth Service will provide a long-term
    and effective means of reconstructing South
    African society whilst at the same time
    developing the abilities of young people through
    service and learning.

    volunteers

INSTITUTIONAL ARRANGEMENTS
  • Partnership Project Team
  • Chaired by the Minister in the Presidency
    responsible for youth (or a representative
    nominated by the Minister). The PPT includes
    representatives from key government departments
    (including Labour and Education as well as
    obviously DpW) as well as the youth sector.
  • National Youth Service Unit (NYSU)
  • A National Youth Service Unit that reports to the
    PPT has been established. The Unit is managed by
    UYF, NYC and the Presidency.

PRINCIPLES
  • The service activities will involve the
    maintenance of buildings and you will work in
    areas related to the skills you have developed as
    well as other areas of work required by the
    construction project
  • The programme will run for a period of a year
    during which time you will attend technical
    training, life skills and undertake service in
    construction
  • The programme is fulltime and everyone who joins
    will have to sign a code of conduct committing to
    attend all aspects of the programme

  • There will be appropriate incentives to support
    your participation this includes accredited
    training and support to access sustainable exit
    opportunities as well as a stipend of EPWP
    wage
  • NYS will work in a manner that develops a culture
    of self-reliance and community ownership
  • Effective partnerships should drive successful
    implementation of NYS.

PRINCIPLES
  • You will begin with a 3 week orientation which
    starts a week after you are selected
  • There will then be technical training and then
    service as well as training (in both the
    technical skills where needed and in the life
    skills)
  • There will also be after care support for you
    after the programme

NYS PLEDGE
  • As a participant of National Youth Service, I am
    the change that I would like to see in my
    Community and my Country I pledge not to ask
    what South Africa can do for me, but to ask this
    day, what I can do for my county.
  • I believe that I have potential to make a
    difference and uplift others to enjoy the fruits
    of our freedom.
  • I embrace the spirit of Ubuntu, Umuntu Ngumntu
    Ngabantu I am a person through other people. My
    humanity is tied to yours.
  • I embrace the spirit of Batho Pele and commit to
    serving my fellow citizens with respect and
    professionalism.
