Title: The Beatitudes

1
The Beatitudes
  • Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is
    the kingdom of heaven.

2
The Beatitudes
  • Jesus has been preaching repentance
  • He is addressing His disciples
  • Why should they repent?
  • Whats in it for them if they do repent?
  • How do they repent and receive the reward?

3
The Beatitudes
  • Definite order
  • Not a haphazard collection of thoughts
  • Presents a picture of a man repenting and turning
    to God
  • No one can be in the Kingdom who is not poor in
    spirit

4
Poverty and blessedness
  • Greek has 2 words for poor
  • Penes A working man, not destitute, but with
    nothing extra
  • Ptochos absolute and abject poverty
  • The root word means to cower, to be beaten to
    the knees
  • This is the word in Mt 53
  • Blessed are the poor in spirit . . .
  • This Beatitude is an emptying of ones self, the
rest will speak of filling that emptiness

5
Misunderstandings of Mt 53
  • Material poverty (Catholic commentaries)
  • Prov 307-9
  • Nothing particularly spiritual or righteous about
    being poor
  • Poverty is just another source of temptation
  • Poor spirited (lack of drive)
  • Just another term for laziness
  • Prov 66-11

6
Poor in spirit
  • My attitude towards myself
  • The world teaches being rich in spirit
  • Self-reliance, self-confidence
  • Poor in spirit does not mean being ashamed of
    your abilities
  • Nor does it mean pretending to be someone you are
    not
  • Perhaps some examples would help

7
Examples
  • Peter
  • Luke 58
  • Understood honestly his spiritual poverty
  • Matt 2633-35
  • But was still bold and confident
  • Paul
  • Phil 34-6
  • A man of note and education
  • Phil 37-9
  • But knew his spiritual poverty (Rom 724)

8
What does poor in spirit mean?
  • Complete absence of pride and self-reliance (Jer
    1023 1 Cor 318)
  • Understanding our worthlessness before God (Psa
    84)
  • No reliance on ancestry, finances, education, etc
    (Phil 34-9)

9
What does poor in spirit mean?
  • To be poor in spirit is to have a humble opinion
    of ourselves
  • to be sensible that we are sinners, and have no
    righteousness of our own
  • to be willing to be saved by the rich grace and
    mercy of God
  • To be willing to be where God places us, to bear
what He lays on us, to go where He bids us, and
    to die when He commands
  • To be willing to be in His hands, and to feel
that we deserve no favor from Him.
  • It is opposed to pride, and vanity, and
    ambition.
    Albert Barnes

10
The emptying before the filling
  • The glass has to be emptied before it can be
    filled with something better
  • Before God can fill our spirits with something
better, we must empty them of all else
  • Spiritual poverty before God

11
Luke 234
  • And Simeon blessed them and said to Mary His
mother, "Behold, this Child is appointed for the
fall and rise of many in Israel . . .
  • Note the order
  • The fall then comes the rise
  • Repentance comes before salvation

12
How do we become poor in spirit?
  • Not by leaving the world (Essenes)
  • Looking to God and His word
  • Realizing we have nothing of value to bring to
God as the price of salvation
  • Coming to God empty, naked, and vile

13
If you are poor in spirit,
  • Then the Kingdom of heaven can be yours
