LIBRARY DATABASES Commercial, usually
Internet-based products which identify journal
articles by subject. Not all articles referred
to in databases are held by the ECU
Library. Databases always give article
citations. Most give abstracts too - some provide
full text of articles. Go to Journal Articles
(databases) then Databases by subject to find
journal articles.
15
Online Databases

Metaquest (click here to read Tip sheet)

LIBRARY RESEARCH PROCESS
  • Understanding the topic definitions.
  • Define the scope assignment length
  • Gather the information recording where you
    found it
  • ECU catalogue
  • Databases
  • Internet search engines
  • Analyse the data
  • Write the report remember referencing

21
Sample essay topic
  • Example
  • Compare and contrast the criminal and
  • civil law and their impact on security
  • within an organisation.

22
Planning your search
23
Define the scope
Consider the length of the assignment Do you
want to cover many areas briefly? OR to look at
one area in greater detail For broad cover use
books. For up to date and in depth information
use Journal articles.
24
Gather the information
  • Use a subject dictionary or encyclopedia for
    definitions
  • Then look in the ECU catalogue for e-books and
remember - keep detailed records of all used
  • Next do a search for Journal articles using a
    database. (see slides 15 18)
  • Lastly check appropriate internet sites

25
Boolean operators
  • AND
  • to retrieve references containing both (or all)
    concepts
  • eg loss prevention and mining
  • Using more terms retrieving fewer references
  • Only references that contain both concepts
    simultaneously are included

26
Boolean operators
OR to retrieve references covering either or both
concepts eg standard or code Using more terms
more references Any reference that has either
word in it.
27
Boolean operators
NOT to find references on a subject, but exclude
references which also cover another subject eg
surveillance not cctv Using this operator will
reduce the number of references
28
Record ALL Your Sources
  • Always write the full details of any materials
    you plan to reference, e.g.
  • Books
  • Print Journals
  • Electronic sources
  • Retrieval date (date found)
  • Database retrieved from, or
  • URL

29
5. Referencing/EndNote
  • This link on the homepage takes you to the
following page where you can access videos,
    Powerpoints about referencing, the ECU
Referencing Guide ALSO the Endnote link will take
you to a page where you can download the software
  • http//www.ecu.edu.au/library/media/Referencing/r
    eferencing.html

30
Produce your assignment
  • Citing Your Sources
  • Acknowledge the source of all material you used
    to write your paper
  • Citations are placed both within the text
  • in-text reference
  • At the end of the paper in reference list
  • end-text reference

31
Plagiarism how to avoid it
  • It is using the work of others without
    acknowledgement
  • Is academic theft
  • Against university rules
  • Attracts severe penalties - Failing your
    assignment
  • NEVER cut and paste text from any source,
    especially WWW
  • Learn how to paraphrase
  • Use correct referencing see ECU referencing
    guide.
