Title: Types of Volcanoes and Volcanic Eruptions:
1- Types of Volcanoes and Volcanic Eruptions
- Stratovolcano (a.k.a. composite cone).
Examples Mt. Pinatubo, Mt. St. Helens, Mt.
Pelee, Mt. Vesuvius, Mt. Rainer, Mt. Fuji, etc. - Volcanic dome
- Cinder Cones
- Sheild Volcano. Example Hawaiian Islands
- Fissure Eruptions. Examples Iceland, Columbia
River, Deccan Traps, Keewanawan Lavas - Caldera Eruptions. Examples Krakatau,
Yellowstone, Long Valley, Valles)

24- Types of Intrusions
- Pluton a large, intrusive igneous rock body,
including batholiths, stocks, laccoliths, and
lopoliths. - Dike a tabular intrusive igneous rock body that
occurs across strata, discordant (cuts across at
a high angle) to bedding. - Sill a tabular intrusive igneous rock body that
occurs between strata, concordant (parallel) to
bedding. Cf. Flow

32To conclude Two more famous eruptions from
antiquity
- Thera (small caldera eruption), Island of
Santorini, Greece. Minoan age - Mt. Vesuvius, Italy 79 A.D. (Stratovolcano)
33Santorini is a remnant island of the Thera
caldera eruption.

34Minoan-age artifacts are buried under ash exposed
in cliffs, below modern city on hilltop. Some
argue the legend of the lost city of Atlantis is
based on the Thera eruption.
