2
Agenda
  • What are we learning today
  • Students will know that the periodic table has
    trends.
  • How are we learning this
  • Students will be able to perform a laboratory
experiment that will show trends within the
    periodic table.
  • Students will be able to balance chemical
    reactions from a worksheet.
  • Why is it important
  • By learning these trends students will be
familiar with the idea that common element
    families act in similar ways.

3
Lab safety
  • This is a formal lab. It is of the utmost
importance that you and your group pay close
attention to the procedures! Any failure to
adhere to the procedures will constitute removal
    from the lab.
  • Every member is responsible for wearing safety
glasses the entire time during the lab exercise.
  • Absolutely no horseplay will be allowed. No
    exceptions!

4
Formal lab write ups
  • Hypothesis

carbonate or ammonium phosphate then it will
react according to the type of element present.
  • Procedures
  • Copy the procedures.
  • Data/data tables
  • Copy data table and complete it.
  • Answers to questions
  • Answer all questions in complete sentences.
  • Conclusions
  • Use your data and periodic table to write a
    conclusion.

5
When finished with the lab
  • Clean all test tubes thoroughly! Others need to
    use them also.
  • Turn in your completed lab into your classes
    folder.
  • Grab a class set of the balancing equations
worksheet and work on this on your own paper.
Make sure to write down all questions as the ones
you dont get finished in class are due on Friday
    as homework.
