Schedule of the Day
  • Children meet and attendance taken in the
    cafeteria.
  • Period one 815-920
  • Snack 920-940
  • Period two 940-1030
  • Recess 1030-1110
  • Period three 1110- 1200
  • Lunch 1200- 1230

Phonemic Awareness
  • Students play with the words, rhyming, stretching
    the words out to hear the separate sounds.

Phonics
  • The ability to use letter-sound correspondences
    to identify words is a primary difference between
    good readers and poor readers.

Fluency
  • Essential to fluency is the ability to read words
    automatically with no apparent cognitive effort,
    or automaticity.
  • The ability to read with expression is the
    second important element.

Vocabulary
  • Indirect word learning vs. direct word learning
  • Using context clues
  • Natural contexts

Comprehension
  • When children are able to comprehend text, they
    understand what they read, they remember what
    they read, and they are able to communicate with
    others about what they read.

Each child was tested with the DIBELS to help
design instruction to address their needs.

Initial Sound Fluency
  • Average increase in range from 0-8 was 2.7 points
  • Greatest gain was 6 points
  • One decrease of 3 points due to outside factors

Letter Naming Fluency
  • Average increase was 12 points for incoming first
    grade students

Phoneme Segmentation Fluency
  • Average gain was nine points
  • Test of in-coming first graders

Oral Reading Fluency
  • Average gain of 18 words per minute

Benefits
  • Transportation provided greater attendance
  • Greater attendance provided more learning time
    per pupil
  • Longer class time provided more learning time
  • Instructors were very pleased with attendance and
    teaching time
