Case Study Projects - CCMT
  • Brotherhood Synagogue Project

- Polytechnic University New Dorm. Project
  • NYCTA Subway station Rehabilitation
  • Polytechnic University Trade Coordination

Technical Non-Technical Problems of Applying
3D-Based Project Systems
  • Discovered technical problems from the case
    studies are
  • Require labor-intensive and time-consuming
operations for converting 2D drawings to
  • 3D model, then to 4D by the association of
    design objects with time.
  • Current 4D is only project sequences animation
    modules.
  • Current 4D only reaches design-schedule
integration not a fully integrated system.
  • Discovered non-technical problems from the case
    studies are
  • Require additional services converting 2D to 3D,
    then to 4D
  • How to utilize 3D models ? Only for
    preconstruction marketing purposes or continues
    in the
  • construction phase. ( different services fee
    )
  • Different project types , vertical or
horizontal, and different project attributes, new
    or
  • rehabilitation, will affect the effectiveness
    of 3D model
  • How to balance the additional 3D-model service
fee ? Which project participants will pay the
  • fee ?
  • Is it time-effective ( e.g. when change orders
are requested ) to reflect changes by using 3rd
  • party consultants to update and maintain 3D
    models ?
  • How details a 3D model is required in order to
be utilized to coordinate different trades ?
  • ( e.g. MEP )

NDCON System Design Approach
NDCON
Concept of nD -
Upgrade a design object from a Geometric Object
(x,y,z) to a
Business/Management Object ( x,y,z,time,cost,procu
rement,etc) (Chang,
2000)
Zero (minimum) -Information-Buffered Philosophy
( Information Buffer Accumulated Information
to be processed )- A Strategy to Integrate a
Project Process form design through construction
phases particularly when a design change occurs

Another research project pursued at
Polytechnic by Eric Hsiao-Hua Chang, takes the 4D
sequence scheduling problem even further by
bringing multiple sequences into a single model.
He calls his patented approach NDCON, for
n-dimensional construction management information
system. The goal is to provide a tool to help
contractors adjust and re-balance complex
schedules when the effects of delays ripple
through other disciplines. Polytechnic has often
found itself at the applied end of the research
spectrum, as it is construction manager of the
school's own multi-project, 95- million
construction program. . (by Tom Sawyer, ENR
June 3rd ,2002 issue, P.52)

What kind of projects and Who will gain benefits
from the 3D-Based Technologies ?
  • - A Complex Design Project
  • A Project involved with Multiple Project
    Participants
  • A long Term (Multi-Phases) Project
  • A CM _at_ Risk Project G.C / CM gain benefits
  • A Cost-Plus Project Owners gain benefits
  • How about Designers ? Revenue Share..?
