Overview of COMU
  • As a state university ÇOMU was established in
1992 in the city of Çanakkale (population about
    76000).
  • Approximately 20.000 students have been
enrolled in 9 faculties, 2 (4 year) colleges and
2 institutes, and also 11 (2 year) vocational
    schools.

4
Overview of Çanakkale Onsekiz Mart University
(COMU)
  • In addition to Scientific Technology Research
Center (that has ICP-AES (for elemental
analysis), GC-MS (for organics analysis), various
    spectrophotometers, TSS (total suspended
    solids), Oxygenmeter), other laboratories exist,
such as biology, chemical analysis, chemistry,
microbiology, natural sciences, and soil sciences
    to conduct research.

5
International Relations with Other Universities
and Cooperation
  • Since the 2004-2005 academic year, ÇOMU has
been actively participating in the EU
    Socrates/Erasmus and Leonardo Education
Programmes. Total 11 students went abroad using
Socrates/Erasmus and Leonardo Programmes in the
first academic year. 21 students went abroad
using the same programmes in the second
    (2005-2006) academic year.

6
International Relations with Other Universities
and Cooperation
  • From overseas, 4 and 9 university students
came to ÇOMU in 2004-2005 and 2005-2006 academic
    years, respectively.
  • From ÇOMU, 5 and 12 faculty members visited
various European Union Universities in 2004-2005
and 2005-2006 academic years. From abroad 7 and 9
European faculty members used exchange programmes
to visit ÇOMU in 2004-2005 and 2005-2006 academic
    years.

7
International Relations with Other Universities
and Cooperation
  • In addition, ÇOMU has introduced the ECTS
system for all programmes, alongside the local
    credit system.

8
  • Geological, Geophysical, and Environmental Eng.
    Departments (Faculty of Engineering and
    Architecture)
  • Biology, Chemistry, and Geography Departments
    (Fac. of Science and Letters)
  • Public Administration Dept. (Fac. of Economics)
  • Fundamental Sciences Dept. (Fac. of Fisheries)
  • Soil Science and Landscape Architecture Depts.
    (Fac. of Agriculture)
  • have been educating their students and perform
research on naturel environment and ecosystem
    preservation.

9
Education and Research
  • All programmes are more or less related to
    Natural Areas and Ecosystem Preservation.
  • Approximately 30 academicians (but not limited
with this number) have worked and/or will be
willing to work on the environment, in the
general sense, or Natural Areas and Ecosystem
    Preservation in specific.

10
ÇOMU has the following facilities
  • Scientific Tecnology Research Centre that
    equipped with the
  • Oxygenmeter
  • ICP-AES (Inductively Coupled Plasma - Atomic
    Emission Spectroscopy),
  • GC-MS (Gas Chromatography - Mass Spectrometry),
  • UV-Visible Spectrophotometer (for water waste
    water analyses),
  • TSS (Total Suspended Solids)

11
Main Education and Research
  • In Faculty of Engineering and Architecture,
geological structure and geological change are
    researched.
  • In Faculty of Fisheries, water pollution and its
effect on aquatic living resources in the
    Norhtern Aegean are investigated.
  • Finally, academicians from Faculty of Agriculture
study soil pollution, landscape architecture and
    optimum growth of plant resources.

12
Scientists in Geological Engineering department
studies on
  • Environmental and engineering geology,
    geothermal systems, hydrogeology, fate and
    transport of environmental contaminants on
terrestrial environment and in groundwater. They
are keen on working closely with other scientists
of interest to perform studies in environmental
    geology and hydrogeology.
