THERMOMETERS Rules for your pocketbook
1. Handle with care.
2. Do not shake down.
3. Not a stirring rod!
4. Do not allow thermometer to touch the
container that is being heated.
5. Be sure the thermometer goes high or
low enough.
6. Do not remove thermometer from
material when reading it.

Graduated Cylinders (Theyre Smart)
The liquid in the cylinder forms a
concave surface this is called a Meniscus
(not in your knee)
Reading the Cylinder
1. For liquids only
  • Cylinder must be on level
  • surface for accurate reading

3. Read it at eye level
4. The bottom of the meniscus is what counts

Triple Beam Balance (or quadruple beam)
  • Zero Riders and be sure beam balances at zero.
  • Measure materials in separate containers.
  • Move the hundreds rider to the left until the
    beam drops.
  • Do the same to the rest of the riders until you
    come to the smallest.
  • Adjust the smallest rider until the beam is
    balanced.
  • The mass is the sum of all the riders together.

Electronic Scale What we use most of the time.
  • Do not put heavy objects on the scales, they will
    break!
  • Always use the grams scale unless told otherwise.
  • If measuring a substance in a container, place
    the container on the scales and then zero the
    scales.
