What is an Idol?

  worship

Idol Worship

• (Rom 121-25) Because that, when they knew God,
  they glorified him not as God, neither were
  thankful but became vain in their imaginations,
  and their foolish heart was darkened. Professing
  themselves to be wise, they became fools, And
  changed the glory of the uncorruptible God into
  an image made like to corruptible man, and to
  birds, and fourfooted beasts, and creeping
  things Who changed the truth of God into a lie,
  and worshipped and served the creature more than
  the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen.

Idol Worship

• Brought about by mans insecurity.
• Man wanted something they can experience with
  their 5 senses
• Touch
• See
• Taste
• Hear
• Smell

Exodus 201-6

• Thou shalt have no other gods before me.
• Gods something we worship and serve
• (Rom 616) Know ye not, that to whom ye yield
  yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are
  to whom ye obey
• If we put something before God then we are
  practicing a form of Idol Worship

Idol of Riches

• (Matt 624) No man can serve two masters for
  either he will hate the one, and love the other
  or else he will hold to the one, and despise the
  other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon.

• Some put riches over God

• (Matt 1626) For what is a man profited, if he
  shall gain the whole world, and lose his own
  soul? or what shall a man give in exchange for
  his soul?
• What would you give for exchange for your soul?

• Christs remedy
• (Matt 1921-22) Jesus said unto him, If thou
  wilt be perfect, go and sell that thou hast, and
  give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in
  heaven and come and follow me. But when the
  young man heard that saying, he went away
  sorrowful for he had great possessions.
• Christ knew what he loved more!

Idol of Riches

• We all have possessions today.
• Are we using them to the glory of God?
• Command
• (1 Tim 617-19) Charge them that are rich in
  this world, that they be not high-minded, nor
  trust in uncertain riches, but in the living God,
  who giveth us richly all things to enjoy That
  they do good, that they be rich in good works,
  ready to distribute, willing to communicate
  Laying up in store for themselves a good
  foundation against the time to come, that they
  may lay hold on eternal life.

• (1 Sam 85) And said unto him, Behold, thou art
  old, and thy sons walk not in thy ways now make
  us a king to judge us like all the nations.
• The Israelites were not satisfied with their
  King. God
• They wanted a fallible Man instead of God for a
  King. Why?

• Some do this same thing today!
• The Church is the Kingdom of God
• (Matt 1618-19) And I say also unto thee, That
  thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build
  my church and the gates of hell shall not
  prevail against it. And I will give unto thee
  the keys of the kingdom of heaven and whatsoever
  thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in
  heaven and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth
  shall be loosed in heaven.

• Some are not happy with the oneness of the Church
• (Eph 44-5) There is one body, and one Spirit,
  even as ye are called in one hope of your
  calling One Lord, one faith, one baptism
• Is there One Lord?
• There is only One Body
• Then theres One faith
• And theres One Baptism

• Some are not happy with the organization of the
  Church.
• Local independent Congregations
• Elders
• Deacons
• Members
• Evangelist
• Universal Church
• Christ as the Head (Eph 122-23) And hath put
  all things under his feet, and gave him to be the
  head over all things to the church, Which is his
  body, the fulness of him that filleth all in
  all.
• Nothing else authorized
• Cant be united on anything else

• Why are they not Satisfied?
• Not like the other nations!
• They want man to rule instead of God with his
  word.
• Rule by mans authority instead of by Gods Word

Idol of Feelings

• Pietism Accept feelings over knowledge of Gods
  Word
• Substitutes feelings for intellect
• (Prov 2826) He that trusteth in his own heart
  is a fool but whoso walketh wisely, he shall be
  delivered.
• Heart will deceive you!

• (Jer 1023) O LORD, I know that the way of man
  is not in himself it is not in man that walketh
  to direct his steps.
• We must walk according to Gods Way
• (Ps 119105) Thy word is a lamp unto my feet,
  and a light unto my path
• Gods word is our guide
• Wisdom gives faith
• (Rom 1017) So then faith cometh by hearing, and
  hearing by the word of God.

• (Luke 1810-14)
• Self-righteous
• Some think they cannot be wrong
• (Rom 34) Let God be true, but every man a liar
  as it is written, That thou mightest be justified
  in thy sayings, and mightest overcome when thou
  art judged.
• This applies even to our own selves

• Some think they do everything for God, while
  everyone else sits idle
• (1 Thess 411-12) And that ye study to be quiet,
  and to do your own business, and to work with
  your own hands, as we commanded you That ye may
  walk honestly toward them that are without, and
  that ye may have lack of nothing.

Who will you Serve?

• (Josh 2415) And if it seem evil unto you to
  serve the LORD, choose you this day whom ye will
  serve whether the gods which your fathers served
  that were on the other side of the flood, or the
  gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell but
  as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.
