Title: NIMAs

1
NIMAs MSDS Vision
2
Topics
  • NIMAs view of MSDS
  • Specifics on how NIMA plans to process MSDS
  • Requirements
  • Production
  • Requests/Delivery

3
NIMAs MSDS Vision
  • Establish a web based collaborative requirements
    management environment.
  • Provide a intensification to Foundation Data
(imagery, elevation feature) to support a
    mission specific need.
  • Provide MSDS Just in Time except over training
areas and where Commands identify critical
    requirements.
  • Deliver MSDS as softcopy or hardcopy information
    as requested by customer.
  • Deliver an information management and
    dissemination environment capable of discovery
and retrieval of geospatial information at the
    coverage/feature level.
  • Customer uses MSDS direct or fuses components of
MSDS to satisfy mission specific needs with the
    ability to value-add.

4
Mission Specific Data
THE HARD PART
  • Generated to support specific mission need
  • Densification of Foundation Data
  • Just in Time - Responsiveness
  • Supports hardcopy product generation

Higher Resolution Controlled Image Base
5
Requirements
  • Web based collaborative requirements management
environment will be developed to accommodate MSDS
    requirement submissions - Requirements Analysis
    System (RAS) replacement
  • Requirements will have to be managed and
    prioritized at the Div/Corps/Unified Command
levels prior to submission to NIMA. Most
duplicate requirements should be resolved by the
Unified Command prior to submission to NIMA.

Whats a Feature MSDSTomorrow?
TODAY
TOMORROW
?
What are the essential elements of
geospatial information needed for the mission at
hand?
FOUNDATION DATA
7
MSDS Production CapabilitiesWhats Possible?
  • Extraction of any combination of features and
    attributes
  • Can extract finish data by
  • Digital finishing in VPF format (vector)
  • Digital finishing as view in ADRG or CADRG format
    (raster)
  • Hardcopy finishing in standard format or custom
    view

8
MSDS Delivery CapabilitiesWhats Possible?
  • Data discovery and retrieval will be via the NIMA
Gateway until the NIMA Information Access
Services (IAS) is operational and Image Product
Libraries, Command Image Libraries, and NIMA
    Libraries host geospatial data.
  • Can finish deliver MSDS coverages
    incrementally.
  • Finished digital MSDS will be immediately placed
on the appropriate NIMA Gateway/Image Library
server once complete for pull or push
    dissemination.

TODAY Products Coverage Possible
TOMORROW Products, Coverages, Features

Feature MSDS Recommendations
  • Determine features and attributes required to
support terrain visualization and decision aids
    for specific missions.
  • Develop a manageable number of MSDS levels that
can support the operational concepts of AV 2010.
Less dense levels of MSDS should be subsets of
denser MSDS to increase production efficiency.
  • Focus development of initial/near-term MSDS
candidates based on existing features coverages
    in existing product specifications and
    prototypes.
  • Requirements should address feature data of
    increasing density to support deployment
    timelines expected under AV 2010.
  • Consider the power of FD and/or MSDS fusion - may
eliminate need for certain features if varying
MSDS levels of CIB and elevation can provide the
    same information.
  • Spiral develop MSDS and fused data through
    experiments, demonstrations, and exercises with
live forces and Battle Labs, to assist in
    determining requirements.
