Innovation of the competition formats at
EuroSkills 2008
  • Rotterdam, 16 March 2007
  • Stefan Praschl
  • Board member ESPO

9
Basic Idea (1)
  • Organise international vocational competitions in
which current vocational training and excellent
vocational skills are at the forefront.
  • EuroSkills event should represent the vocations
and skills necessary for Europes competitive
edge in the world. The following sectors are
    involved
  • Modern, high-tech vocations
  • Traditional trades
  • Innovative trades in ICT
  • Trades requiring social and communications skills

10
Basic Idea (2)
  • The presentation of the trades should have a
thematic, open and recognisable approach in which
seeing (the competitions and demonstrations) and
experiencing (the participation events) play an
    important role.
  • The heart of the event will always be the
competitions they have the greatest value in
publicity terms. To honour a winner ist to create
    a hero!
  • It is therefore necessary to apply competitions
models that enable the skills of the competitors
to be displayed and measured in a way that
    attracts public interest.
  • There must also be room to showcase trades that
cannot be presented in a competition format, by
    including demonstrations or presentations.

11
Basic Idea (3)
  • Competitions, Hands-on Demonstrations,
    Demonstrations
  • Duration of the competition
  • Maximum of 18 hours, divided in periods of three
    days
  • Numbers and types of competitors
  • Age criteria (between 18 to 25 years) which may
    vary per competition field
  • For a team competition it is not essential, that
one country will be able to field a complete
team. Individually registered competitors will be
    divided between the teams.
  • Assessors
  • Number is limited, varies per competition field
  • Official language
  • English

12
Competition Formats (1)
  • Individual, modular competitions
  • Individual, multi-disciplinary competitions
  • Team competition, multi-disciplinary
  • Team competition, challenge
  • A very important element of all competition
formats is the presentation of the trades to the
public, and the interactivity with the public. To
ensure this element it is defined in the
    Technical Outlines per skill.

13
Competition Formats (2)
  • Individual, modular competitions
  • Skills modules, separate prizes can be awarded
for each module (Tour de France-principle)
  • Individual, multi-disciplinary competitions
  • The various skills of the competitor are assessed
on the basis of the end result. Not the process
leading to the result is important, but the way
it is presented and explained. The presentation
during the competition will focus strongly on the
public response, since it is a model that is
    especially suited to creative trades
    (hairdressing, floristry, ...)

14
Competition Formats (3)
  • Team competition, multi-disciplinary
  • In a multi-disciplinary team competition, for
example, a small business will be under the
spotlight as it presents a selection of trades
within one framework. The various disciplines
within this framework should work together to
    perform individual projects, whereby
    international communication and organisation play
an important role. Individual skills and working
    together will both be assessed.

15
Competition Formats (4)
  • Team competition, challenge
  • In a challenge team competition a team comprising
several disciplines works together to find a
solution to a problem outlined in advance. This
means that cooperation between team members
extends beyond just the production. Other skills
include the design of solutions, drawing up
    calculations, purchasing materials and obtaining
the required knowledge or expertise. The end
result, and therefore the team, will be assessed
    (for example Landscape Challenge)

16
Competition Formats (5)
  • For example Building Construction
  • A number of trades (Brick Layer, Wall and Floor
    Tiler, Carpenter, Metall Roofing, Stonemasoner)
will be brought together to work towards a joint
    end product.
  • Competition floor Skeleton of an apartment (50
m²) including a living room, bedroom, kitchen and
    bathroom.
  • Within this context, through discussions among
the team members and, where required in sequence,
the team members can perform their skills to
    finish off the apartment.
  • So far as assessment of the test projects is
concerned, the scheme must ensure that it is
possible to evaluate the individual skills,
including social skills, as well as evaluate team
    performance.

17
Awarding System
  • To win or not to win an award at competitions has
large consequences for the attention the
    achievement receives in the media
  • Due to the fact that EuroSkills premises
promotion of vocational skills, to send
competitors home without an award is a negative
    way to get media attention
  • From this view, for the distribution of the
awards a modus has to be found in which winning
awards for a larger number of competitors is a
possibility. In this it is not the intention to
devaluate the value of gold, silver and bronze
too much. Medals are only awarded to the best
  • Not just awarding for the basis for the complete
final result, but for finished units within that
    final product
