FC5 Design Goals
  • Support newer hardware
  • Upgrade FC3 features in parallel
  • Use more vendor packages
  • Make it easier to port our environment to new OS
    releases

FC5 Design Goals
  • We have moved to vendor packages where practical
    and where it does not pose a conflict/risk (see
    list later on)
  • We have tried to integrate our local changes into
    portable formats where possible (i.e. PAM)
  • But /usr/local will still be under depot control!

  • Emacs/xemacs, tex/latex
  • samba, netatalk, tftp-server
  • unnecessary network services

Some things you will notice
  • Graphical login (several WM choices)
  • Sendmail, not MMDF (Just like FC3)
  • Newer OpenOffice, firefox, etc.
  • Evince for .pdf and .ps documents

Hardware Support
  • Kernel is 2.6 based
  • SATA disks fully supported
  • Better CD-RW support
  • Better multimedia support
  • Better USB support (memory keys, especially)
  • ALSA sound support

Laptop Considerations
  • Wireless support using ipw21,200 drivers (built
    into kernel without firmware)
  • Both recommended laptops work (IBM T43/Dell
    D610)
  • 20 gig minimum commitment to Linux

Deployment Schedule
  • Beta release now
  • SSH/SSHD works!
  • telnet/telnetd working with Kerberos
  • Many misc. collections missing
  • Omega release by mid August (for Grad Student PCs)
