Evaluating Climate Change and Development
2The Issues
- The Domestic Firewood Requirements
- Temperatures from 43o C to -17O C (Human
Settlement areas) - Bio-mass 86 (50 and above at National level).
- Energy bills 3rd highest expenses in NA 70
households unemployed or under employed - Existing problems with the houses/construction
- Cold (low thermal efficiency)
- Smoke , ventilation and illumination
- Seismic Vulnerability
- Planning (space and village)
- Un-employment
- Disappearance of indigenous skills and endogenous
knowledge

6Evaluating the Solutions for Impact
- Firewood Requirement Assessment
- Pre/Post Intervention
- The actual amount of firewood used in sample
households - Responsibilities
- Householders (daily/Weekly)
- Village Resource Person (weekly)
- Field Officers (monthly)
- ME Officers (monthly, quarterly)
Firewood Monitoring Mechanism
7Findings Pre Interventions
- Baseline Scenario
- Firewood the main source of fuel for majority of
household (NA 80 and Yasin Valley 96) - High fuel requirement due to house non-thermal
construction methods - Firewood shortage through out the year,
especially in winter - Firewood prices rapidly growing, it more
expensive in the remote/cold areas due to
transportation cost. - 47 household buy firewood
8Findings Post Interventions
9Findings Post Interventions
- Save from 2 - 3.64 tons of firewood i.e. 3 tons
to 5.46 tons of CO2 with - 77 houses have 2 products- saving 5 tons of
firewood yearly.
10CO2 Emission Reductions
Findings Post Interventions
11Sustaining the Solutions
- Artisans Training
- Carpenters, Masons, Tinsmiths, Plumbers,
Electricians. - Establishment of Entrepreneurs/suppliers
- Carpenters, Masons, Tinsmiths, Sales Persons,
- Promotion
- Road Shows, Radio Talk Shows, Resource Persons.
