5 Signs Your Home Might Be Hosting Termites An
Expert's Guide

1. Mysterious Clicking Sounds in the Walls
One unusual sign that might indicate the presence
of termites is a quiet clicking sound coming from
the walls. Soldier termites bang their heads
against wood or shake their bodies when the
colony is disturbed to signal danger to other
termites. Additionally, worker termites,
responsible for causing most damage, are noisy
eaters. If you put your ear close to any wood
infested by termites, you might hear them
munching away.

2. Hollow-Sounding Wood
Termites typically consume wood from the inside
out, leaving a thin veneer of timber or paint. So
if you tap on wood and it sounds hollow, it could
be a sign of a termite infestation. This can
include door frames, skirting boards, and other
wooden structures within the home. Sometimes,
this damage isn't visible because termites may
not eat through the outermost layer of wood.

3. Hard-to-Open Windows and Warped Doors
Termites produce moisture as they eat through
wood, which can cause frames to warp. If you
notice that doors or windows are suddenly
tight-fitting and are hard to open or close, it
might not just be the wet weathertermites could
be the issue. While it's easy to dismiss this as
swelling due to rain, it's worth checking for
termites as a possible cause.

4. Frass Termite Droppings
Drywood termites, unlike their subterranean
counterparts, don't use their feces to build
their tunnels. Instead, they push their droppings
out of small holes near the entrances to their
nest, which can result in a pile of what looks
like sawdust. These termite droppings, known as
frass, are a clear indicator of an infestation.
If you find small, dark, and pellet-like deposits
around your home, it's time to call an expert.

  • 5. Discarded Wings

Flying termites, also known as swarmers or
alates, are often mistaken for flying ants. They
are a reproductive caste of termites that leave
their existing colony to form new reproducing
pairs and establish new colonies. After swarming,
these termites shed their wings. Finding piles of
tiny wings inside your home, especially around
closed windows, doors, and other light sources,
could be a sign of termite swarms inside your
house.
