2What is a Fibro Scan ?
A FibroScan is a non-invasive medical procedure
used to assess the degree of liver fibrosis and
liver stiffness. It employs a specialized
ultrasound probe to transmit shear waves into the
liver tissue, measuring the speed at which these
waves travel. The velocity of these waves
correlates with the stiffness of the liver,
providing valuable information about the extent
of fibrosis or scarring. FibroScan is commonly
utilized as an alternative to liver biopsy,
offering a quicker and less invasive means of
evaluating liver health. This procedure is
especially beneficial for monitoring liver
disease progression in conditions such as
hepatitis, cirrhosis, and fatty liver disease.
3What the diseases that can be identified or
diagnosed by Fibro Scan?
FibroScan is primarily used to assess liver
fibrosis and cirrhosis, detecting conditions like
hepatitis, fatty liver disease, and liver
fibrosis.

4- Preparation
- The patient is asked to fast for several hours
before the FibroScan to ensure accurate results. - It's important to inform the healthcare provider
about any medications, particularly blood
thinners, as they may need to be temporarily
stopped. - Patient Positioning
- The patient is typically asked to lie on their
back, and the right arm is raised behind the head
to expose the right side of the chest. - Probe Placement
- A water-based gel is applied to the skin over the
area where the FibroScan will be performed. - The FibroScan probe, a small device resembling an
ultrasound transducer, is then placed on the skin
in the right intercostal space, where the liver
is located.
How is the procedure of Fibro Scan done?
- Measurement Process
- The healthcare provider, often a technician or
physician, activates the FibroScan, and it sends
a series of low-frequency vibrations through the
liver. - These vibrations create shear waves that travel
through the liver tissue, and the device measures
the speed of these waves to determine liver
stiffness. - Multiple Measurements
- Several measurements are usually taken to ensure
accuracy and reliability. The entire procedure is
relatively quick, often taking only a few
minutes. - Results and Interpretation
- The FibroScan provides immediate results in the
form of a numerical score, known as the liver
stiffness measurement (LSM). This score
correlates with the degree of liver fibrosis. A
lower score indicates minimal fibrosis, while
higher scores suggest more advanced fibrosis or
cirrhosis. - The healthcare provider interprets the results
and discusses them with the patient, providing
information about the liver's condition and
potential next steps in management or further
testing.
