Uses of Flotation Agents, and its short
classification
Flotation Reagent is the type of agent that is
used in the process of mineral flotation, it
adjusts the behaviour of flotation of minerals
and helps achieve a good effect of separation of
minerals.

• Type of Flotation Agents
• There are three types of flotation agents namely,
  flotation collectors, flotation conditioners and
  flotation frothers.
• Flotation Collectors
• The main function that a flotation collector
  performs is of changing the hydrophilicity of a
  mineral surface. Basically, flotation collectors
  enhance the hydrophilicity and further increase
  the adhesion of a particular mineral on the
  bubble, which makes minerals more floatable.
  Mostly, all minerals are hydrophilic by nature,
  flotation collectors are used as a king of a
  flotation reagent. The most widely used flotation
  agents are xanthate and dithiophosphate.

• Flotation conditioners
• The function that Flotation conditioners perform
  are of adjusting interaction between collector
  and minerals, they also adjust the pH levels and
  also promotes the floatability of the minerals.
  Flotation conditioners are of the following
  categories- pH categories, inhibitors,
  activators, dispersants and more. pH modifiers
  adjust the value of pH in the flotation slurry.
  Activators are reagents which help enhance the
  floatability of minerals in the process of
  flotation, they change the composition of mineral
  surface and even further enhance the effect of
  the collector. Widely used activates as flotation
  conditioners are sulphuric acid, copper
  sulphate, sulphurous acid, sodium sulfide and
  more. Inhibitors are reagents that increase the
  hydrophilicity of minerals and form a film that
  is hydrophilic in nature. The film is formed on
  the surface of the particles of ore. Dispersant
  is a reagent that does not allow fine minerals to
  aggregate. Some dispersants that are used
  commonly are phosphate and sodium silicate.
  Dispersants are flotation agents for phosphates.
• Flotation Frothers
• Their primary function is to promote formation of
  uniform bubbles as well as to enhance the
  elasticity of the surface of the bubble. They
  also make the bubbles more stable and does not
  let them get deformed as easily. Widely used
  flotation frothers are pine oil and MIBC (methyl
  isobutyl carbinol).

A regular method used for elimination of
carbonates from other sedimentary minerals is
reverse flotation. In this process, phosphate
minerals are removed by depression and carbonate
minerals float. Fertiliser coating material used
