What is CFM Certification?

  • CFM certification is CFM certification, which is
the Certified Facility Manager certificate that
building managers can get through the
    International Facility Management Association
(IFMA). Employers and their clients appreciate
the value of CFM certification as it shows that
the facility manager has the right expertise and
    skills to handle increasingly complicated
    questions regarding building management.
  • Training and experience are necessary prior to a
facility manager being able to be able to pass
the CFM test. It is important to note that the
CFM accreditation for facilities managers is not
way linked to the CFM designation previously
offered to accountants and other finance
professionals through the Institute of Management
    Accountants.
  • Initial CFM Qualifications
  • The IMFA also runs a program of education and
testing which lead to the Facility Management
    Professional (FMP) certification. The credential
isnt required to become CFM. CFM however it
could substitute the equivalent of three years
    working experience for CFM qualifications.
  • Candidates who have not completed an advanced
degree in high school need to have at least eight
years of work experience however this can be cut
to 5 years for those who hold of the FMP
certification. It is a test based on knowledge
and all approved facility manager course
materials necessary to pass it is accessible
    through the IMFA.
  • Alongside obtaining either an FMP, or CFM
certificate, you could also get three additional
certifications from IFMA according to your
specific career path the company that provides
    workplace consultation.
  • Education and experience
  • Candidates who are attempting the CFM exam should
have at least some postsecondary education.
Candidates who hold both the FMP credential as
well as the bachelors or associates degrees in
a field not directly related to facility
management must have four years of work
    experience.
  • Holders of a similar bachelors degree and an FMP
must have three years of work experience. In both
instances the individuals who dont hold an FMP
must have another years work experience.
    Students who have completed IMFA-approved
bachelors and masters degree programs must have
three years of experience prior to taking the CFM
test, regardless of whether they have FMP
    certification.

  • Particular Skills Required
  • Candidates for CFM certification should have
previous prior experience in project management
and planning as well as operations and
maintenance management, leadership in relation to
    human and environmental aspects communication,
    finance, quality control and technology.
Candidates with demonstrable prior experience in
all of these areas and have having had a minimal
exposure to other fields are thought to be having
the required qualifications to pass the exam for
Certified Facility Manager. The IMFA provides
online non-mandatory preparation courses to help
applicants particularly those who be lacking in
one or more areas with specific expertise to
    prepare for the exam.
  • The Examination Process
  • There are 180 multiple choice questions on the
facility management certified test and is
administered by a the computer in a testing
center that takes 5 minutes to finish. The test
is designed around specific applications related
to specific areas in which knowledge is
    essential.
  • For instance, questions might concern budgeting
for new maintenance equipment, and the monitoring
of their performance or methods of inventory for
tracking the real property assets. The IFMA
provides a range of study resources, including an
    exam practice.
  • Benefits of obtaining CFM
  • The CFM is a completely voluntary certification
and does not count by any state in which such
licenses are required for a person to be an
administrator of facilities. It is however
dependent on actual experience as an facility
manager, meaning that it demonstrates that its
holders are able apply their expertise and
knowledge to real scenarios that arise in the
field of facilities management. Thus, employers
see CFM as a symbol of excellence and knowledge
and prospective clients seek firms with managers
and employees who have achieved CFM
    certification.
