General Requirements for Patent Drawings
a. Paper Size and Layout Use conventional paper
sizes, such as letters (8.5" x 11") or A4 (210 mm
x 297 mm). Make sure there are enough margins for
binding and that the drawings are oriented in
portrait mode unless a landscape orientation is
required for clarity. b. Paper Quality and
Ink Use good paper that won't become scratched
or discolored to keep your drawing long-lasting.
Make sure your drawing is in black ink on white
paper with clear lines. c. Drawing
Scale Drawings need to be small and consistent.
If they are too small, it will be hard to see the
details. If they are too large, it will look
strange. Let's keep it small and consistent. If
the drawings are too small, you won't be able to
see the details. If they are too large, it will
look strange. d. Numbering and Labels Each page
should be consecutively numbered (e.g., 1/3, 2/3,
3/3), and each drawing should be given a brief
title or description. Reference numerals and
their accompanying elements should be made very
clear for simple identification.

Specific Requirements for Patent Drawings
  • a. Mechanical Inventions
  • For mechanical inventions, show different
perspectives, like front, rear, top, bottom, and
side views. Show the different components, how
they connect, and any moving parts, if
    applicable. Use shading, cross-hatching, or
stippling to show different materials or surface
    textures.
  • b. Electrical and Electronic Inventions
  • When designing patent drawings for electrical and
    electronic inventions, emphasize the circuitry,
components, and their connections. For electronic
components, use standardized symbols and properly
label each element. Show the flow of electricity
or signals through the circuit with arrows or
    lines and suitable annotations.
  • c. Chemical and Biological Inventions
  • For chemical and biological inventions, present
clear and detailed illustrations of the molecular
    or cellular structures involved. Include
necessary labels, such as chemical formulas or
biological names, to accurately depict the
composition and organization of the chemicals or
creatures. When showing chemical structures or
    biological diagrams, adhere to accepted
    conventions.
