1
EXPLORING ECOSYSTEMS
  • UNDERSTANDING FOOD CHAINS, FOOD WEBS, AND
    ENERGY PYRAMIDS
  • -By Laney Lee Science

2
OVERVIEW OF FOOD CHAIN
A food chain is a linear sequence of organisms
where each depends on the previous as a source
of food. It represents energy flow in an
ecosystem.
3
KEY CONCEPTS OF FOOD CHAIN
Producers organisms that produce their own food
through photosynthesis, such as
plants. Consumers organisms that eat other
organisms for energy and nutrients, including
herbivores, carnivores, and omnivores. Trophic
levels the different levels of organisms in a
food chain, including the producer, primary
consumer, secondary consumer, and so on. Energy
flow the movement of energy from one organism to
another in a food chain, as each organism
consumes and is consumed by another. Top
predator the organism at the end of the food
chain that has no natural predators.
4
OVERVIEW OF FOOD WEB
A food web is a complex system of interconnected
food chains that shows the interactions between
different organisms in an ecosystem and their
sources of food.
5
KEY CONCEPTS OF FOOD WEB
Interconnectedness the idea that organisms in an
ecosystem are connected to each other through
multiple relationships. Trophic levels the
different levels of organisms in a food web,
including producers, consumers, and
decomposers. Energy flow the movement of energy
from one organism to another in a food web, as
each organism consumes and is consumed by
another. Food chains the individual chains of
organisms that make up the food
web. Biodiversity the variety of species
present in an ecosystem and their interactions
with each other.
6
OVERVIEW OF ENERGY PYRAMIDS
An energy pyramid is a graphical representation
of energy flow in an ecosystem. It shows the
amount of energy that flows through each trophic
level in a food chain or web, with the most
energy at the bottom and less available at each
higher level.
7
KEY CONCEPTS OF ENERGY PYRAMIDS
Trophic levels the different levels of organisms
in a food chain or food web. Energy flow the
movement of energy from one trophic level to
another. Energy transfer the amount of energy
transferred from one trophic level to the
next. Biomass the amount of living matter in a
given area or volume. Efficiency the percentage
of energy transferred from one trophic level to
the next.
8
SUMARRY OF FOOD WEB, FOOD CHAIN AND ENERGY
PYRAMIDS
Food chains, food webs, and energy pyramids are
essential concepts in understanding energy flow
in an ecosystem. Food chains show the linear
sequence of energy transfer, food webs show the
complex relationships between organisms, and
energy pyramids represent the efficiency of
energy transfer between trophic levels.
