2
  • The Dennis Richmond Award is our annual advocacy
    scholarship honoring a distinguished and
    deserving advocate.
  • This award celebrates a lifelong commitment to
educating and improving the lives of
    disadvantaged children.

Autism Program
  • Students with Autism Program Oakland have unique
and varied needs that require specific attention
in educational programs. Schools have to work
closely with families to develop quality programs
that meet their child's individual needs.
  • In addition to a strong foundation in academic
and social education, the Autism Program offers a
wide range of services for those with autism.
    These include an individualized transition
program, tutoring and study assistance, peer
mentors, and a career development program.

4
  • This program is designed to assist college-level
students with autism in developing the skills
needed for success. The program includes weekly
seminars, one-on-one coaching, and mentors who
guide students in academic, social, and
    independent living skills.
  • The program's staff also offers an individualized
support navigator who meets with students
regularly to get to know them in terms of their
goals, gifts, interests and strengths. The
navigator is there to ensure that students access
the supports and services at Emory that they need
or desire based on feedback from the student.

Children with Special Needs Teacher Award
  • The Children with Special Needs Teacher Award is
presented by the National Association of Special
Education Teachers (NASET) to teachers who have
    demonstrated exceptional dedication to their
students with special needs. Nominations are
judged in the areas of teaching skills, community
    involvement, professional activity and
development, and contributions to the field of
    special education.
  • She has a deep understanding of instructional
best practices and serves as a liaison between
    general education teachers, administrators,
content specialists, and special educators. She
also is active in the field by serving on
    numerous committees, including the Advisory
    Committee for Inclusion.

6
  • Her commitment to teaching is reflected in her
efforts to help her students develop their social
skills and become involved in the school
environment. She has worked to create classroom
environments where all students feel safe,
comfortable and respected. She has been a member
of her PTA since the beginning and is very
    involved in her child's activities.

Down Syndrome Program
  • Down Syndrome Program Berkeley is a genetic
disorder that occurs when an extra copy of
chromosome 21 is present in the body. This extra
chromosome interferes with the way the brain and
    body develop.
  • The condition affects one in every 800 live
births. In most cases, Down syndrome is diagnosed
by a chromosome test performed shortly after
    birth.
  • Babies with Down syndrome are at risk for heart
defects and other health problems. These problems
can range from minor to severe and may be treated
    with medication or surgery.

8
  • Children with Down syndrome should be examined by
a pediatric cardiologist and should have an
echocardiogram, a procedure that evaluates the
structure and function of the heart by using
    sound waves.
  • Other medical conditions that affect people with
Down syndrome include problems with the eyes,
intestines, thyroid and skeleton. Some of these
can be treated with medication or surgery, while
    others require lifelong treatment.
  • Many kids with Down syndrome grow up to be happy,
healthy adults. Some go on to college, while
others find work and stay at home. But no matter
what they choose, these individuals are special
and deserve to have a chance to succeed.
  • The first step in helping a child with Down
syndrome learn is to provide early intervention
services as soon as possible. These services are
mandated by federal law and focus on the unique
needs of infants and toddlers with disabilities.
