STRESS FRACTURE
Stress fractures are tiny breaks in the bone,
usually caused by repetitive force/overuse of
bone. A stress fracture can also develop from
normal use of bone or in patients with
osteoarthritis. The symptoms of a stress fracture
include pain, swelling and aching at the site of
the fracture. When we touch the bone, patient
will feel pinpoint pain. This pain usually starts
after starting any activities and usually
resolves with the rest. Normally patients with
stress fractures are concerned about walking,
usually doctors do not recommend walking when you
have a stress fracture because it can reopen the
healed fracture and increase the recovery time .
You can walk accordingly by monitoring recovery.
In most cases, stress fractures get healed within
6 to 8 weeks. More serious stress fracture takes
a longer time to get heal, may be due to lack of
blood supply. A stress fracture can happen in any
region there is overuse. Usually, they are most
commonly found in the lower extremity as a result
of the impact of various weight-bearing
activities. The most common bone prone to getting
a stress fracture is the tibia bone of the lower
limb (25 to 75 of all stress fractures). Stress
fractures can also occur in the foot region as
the foot is made up of very small bones. Usually,
the second and third metatarsal bone present in
the foot is affected by a stress fracture. Stress
fractures can also be seen in the heel bone
(calcaneus), the hip bone (proximal femur), and
even the lower back.

Causes of Stress Fracture?
  1. Incorrect training or sports technique.

proper intervals while exercising or performing
    vigorous activities.
  3. Changing the surface you exercise on like from
    soft surface to hard/concrete surface.
  4. Running on slope surface roads have more chances
    to get a stress fracture
  5. Use of poor equipment or improper footwear.
  6. Doing repetitive activity in certain sports
Long distance running affects tibia, Basketball,
gymnastic, tennis, or even dance (feet and lower
    back affected)
  7. Having a poor diet or having low vitamin D

4
Diagnosis-
Stress Fracture is usually diagnosed by physical
examination and radio diagnostic investigations
like X-Ray, MRIs, Bone Scans, etc.
Treatment
  1. Include basic treatment" RICE" Resting, Icing,
    Compression, Elevation, etc.
  2. Schedule your doctor's appointment till then to
    prevent any further injury.
  3. If you have any problem or condition like
diabetes or neuropathy keep in mind you have to
    take care of your pain.
  4. If you feel swelling - be concerned about
positioning, also use protective footwear to
    avoid swelling.
  5. Using crutches to avoid weight bearing on foot or
    leg until the bone heals.
  6. Your doctor may apply a cast for relieving pain
    and hasten recovery.
  7. Some fractures need surgery to heal, this is
called internal fixation. Depending on the
location of the fracture your surgeon uses
    screws, nails, etc.
