Sports weren't as competitive. In fact, engaging
in sports was primarily for training and
preparation for war. Thats why most of the
early games involved spear throwing, rocks, and
one-on-one sparring.

THANKS TO THE ANCIENT GREEKS
Formal sports were fina ly introduced to the
world foot and chariot races, jumping, discus
and javelin throwing, wrestling. These were
some of the main events in the first Olympic
Games in 776 BC.

Even when the Romans conquered Greece, the
Olympic games (which, that time, were limited to
males only) continued until a Roman emperor
decided to put an end to them in AD 394.

Archaeologists discovered the ruins of an
Olympic stadium 1500 years later. This inspired
Frenchman Baron Pierre de Coubertins idea to
hold a modern, international version of the
games.
Thus, the first games of the new era were born
in Athens, 1896.

Cricket was born in southeast England in the
late 16th century, and by the 18th century, it
became the national sport. The longest recorded
game was in 1939 and lasted for nine whole days.
TODAY'S POPULAR SPORTS WERE
Basebal and its first rules were devised in 1845
by Alexandar Cartwright and members of the New
York Knickerbocker Baseba l Club.

MORE SPORTS CAME TO EXISTENCE!
Softball was invented by George Hancock in 1887
as a form of indoor baseball. That way, baseball
enthusiasts could still enjoy playing indoors.
In 1892, the first formal rules of basketball
were devised. A soccer ball and a peach basket
were used. Then in 1893, iron hoops and a
hammock- style basketball were introduced.
