1
Different Stone Cutting Techniques
2
  • From crude figures carefully chipped onto cave
walls the decoratively chiselled exteriors of
our museums, to the glossy granite stone offcuts
glowing their way into new kitchens across the
world - stone has been handled by people for
almost centuries. Artists have regularly used
stone for sculptural work. In construction, the
work of the stonemason can detail whole places.

3
  • Here we are listing some of the techniques used
    for stone cutting
  • Diamond Cutting
  • Flaming
  • Stone Polishing

4
  • Diamond Cutting
  • Diamond provides tools like saws, drills and
grinders to cut straight especially solid
surfaces, such as stone. An automated circular
diamond saw has diamond edges fixed all around
the line. This is used to cut away pieces of
redundant stone moulding large boulders into
slices of different sizes and other useful
    pieces.
  • These diamond saws, which are high-pitched and
computer-driven, work more efficiently when wet,
as water keeps the blade from overheating. Many
stone architects will save and frequently reuse
the water used in this stone-cutting process.

  • Flaming
  • A more avant-garde stone-cutting process is
flaming the surface with the help of a jet torch.
Here, high temperatures with a mix of cold water
slice away at the stone leading to it flaking
away. Applying torches on stone can be adopted to
clear away any previous tool impressions, handing
out a natural flame finish - or by applying the
heat for more period will carve into the stone.
  • Mostly flaming is used to build large outdoor
sculptures when it is more efficient to work
on-site. Jet torches are also employed to recover
non-slip surfaces on stone footsteps, clear away
graffiti from walls or even quarry small portions
    of the material.

6
  • Stone Polishing
  • Stone can be hard, plain, matt, smooth or
polished into a great gloss finish like glass. To
do this there are a lot of different stone
polishing machines that can be used. This
consists of grinding - a mechanism identical to
sanding, where giant metal discs or diamonds sand
out bumpiness and imperfections. The next phase
is buffing, where polishing powders and
admixtures such as silicon carbide are bumped
    over the surface.

7
  • For immense gloss finishes, a layer might be
applied. Similar to applying wax on wood, a
polymer will be spread over the stone, which
hands out it an extra shine. At the next stage,
chemicals like fluorosilicate are splashed onto
the stone and glossed with steel wool pads. This
leads to glass crystals to be formed on the
    surface.
  • It is worth keeping in mind that not every stone
can be polished - marbles, granites, and some
limestones work well, but they might all need
    various polishing techniques.
