1
Chemical Uses of Hydrochloric Acid
2
  • Introduction
  • ?
  • Hydrochloric acid, also known as hydrogen
chloride or muriatic acid, is an odourless and
    colourless solution that absorbs hydrogen
    chloride in water.
  • It is a poisonous, corrosive and hazardous liquid
that, when combined with metals, forms explosive
hydrogen gas inducing severe burns and irritation
of the eyes. This highly corrosive chemical
compound can be toxic as well.
  • Production of Hydrochloric Acid
  • Industrially hydrochloric acid is usually
prepared by dissolving hydrogen chloride in
water. Hydrogen chloride can be generated in many
ways, and thus several precursors to it
exist. Today, hydrochloric acid is primarily
manufactured in solutions up to 38 per cent
concentrated grade. Higher concentrations up to
over 40 per cent are chemically possible, but the
evaporation rate is so high that storage and
handling require pressurisation and cooling. Bulk
industrial-grade product is, therefore, 30 per
cent to 35 per cent optimised to balance
transport efficiency and product loss through
    evaporation.

  • Uses of Hydrochloric Acid
  • Known as a 'workhouse chemical, ' hydrochloric
acid has an enormous scope of application in
    chemical synthesis.
  • Production of Inorganic Compounds
  • This acid is used to prepare compounds like
ferric acid, poly aluminium chloride (PAC),
    iron(III) chloride and aluminium carbohydrate,
which are used in treating water.
  • Good-quality hydrochloric acid is used in the
renewal of ion exchange resins. Cation exchange
is extensively used to remove ions such as Na
and Ca2 from aqueous solutions, producing
demineralised water. The acid is used for
flushing the cations from the resins. Akin to its
use for pickling, hydrochloric acid is used to
dissolve many metals, metal oxides and metal
    carbonates.
  • Synthesis of Organic Compounds
  • Hydrochloric acid synthesises organic compounds
like bisphenol A, vinyl chloride, polyvinyl
    chloride and dichloromethane. These organic
compounds have high commercial significance and
are used in the plastic industry.

  • Removing Metal Stains and Cleaning Stone and
    Tiles
  • Hydrochloric acid is used for bleaching clothes
and processing leather in the leather tanning
industry. It removes rust from metals like iron
and copper in a diluted form.
  • Purification of Table Salt and pH Control
  • Hydrochloric acid suppliers in uae  is used to
purify table salts and to regulate the acidity
(pH) of solutions. It is also used in controlling
the pH of food, water and pharmaceutical
    products.
  • Oil Production
  • This compound is injected into rocks to create
large-porous structures that mainly assist oil
    production.
  • Aqua Regia
  • Aqua regia is a yellow fuming liquid used for
cleaning and making jewellery. This solution is
prepared by mixing nitric acid and
concentrated hydrochloric acid in a ratio 13
ratio. The solution can dissolve noble metals
    like gold and platinum.
  • Deionisation
  • Of the six strong mineral acids in
chemistry, hydrochloric acid is the least likely
to undergo oxidation. Despite its acidity, it is
one of the least hazardous strong acids to
    handle.

5
  • Titration
  • Medium-strength hydrochloric acid solutions are
pretty stable upon storage and maintain their
concentration. In addition, the fact that it is
available as a pure reagent makes this acid a
    suitable acidifying compound.
  • Chemstock , Hydrochloric acid is the favoured
acid in titration for determining the number of
bases. Strong acid titrants give more precise
results due to a more distinct endpoint. Azeotropi
c or constant-boiling hydrochloric acid (roughly
20.2 per cent) can be used as a primary standard
in quantitative analysis. However, its exact
concentration depends on the measured atmospheric
    pressure when it is prepared.
  • Sugar Purification
  • The acidic chemical is also applied in the
purification of sugar. Following the removal of
xylose and glucose by acid hydrolysis of
sugarcane juice, the rest of the organic
substances in the solution are removed
    by hydrochloric acid.
  • Rate of Reaction
  • Hydrochloric acid can be used to measure the
rate of reaction of sodium thiosulphate.
