1
Guide to make a Proper Resume Legal field is
full of paperwork and legal writing, but a
recruiter also wants lengthy paperwork, at the
time of hiring a prospective employee. The
answer to this question is a big NO, at the time
of recruiting a candidate for the interview
process for either a job or internship, the
recruiter doesnt look more than thirty seconds
at the resume before going to the next one. So a
proper or ideal resume should be so attractive
that it can hook a recruiter in just seconds, now
attractive doesnt mean using different fonts. A
proper resume is an important step that will
help a law aspirant in their career, whether they
are paralegals, Lawyers, Attorneys, legal
secretaries, legal advisors or any other legal
professionals, owing a professional yet
interesting resume will help in getting their
dream job. A law professional's CV is the same
as other professionals' resumes but the
difference is that there are many configurations
and professional ethics aiming to get a
particular legal career or position. The present
scenario is that the competition for lawyers is
very stiff, in order to have a job in a law firm
or start a career with an internship, it's a
perfectly designed resume that will be the most
important part and often gets neglected also. So
today, this blog consists of tips to make an
ideal resume for legal professionals. Read them
carefully and keep them in mind for the time
when applying for a job or internships.
2
Keep it short and Simple Remember, in legal
professions, what a recruiter is looking for is a
person who can represent the law firm or company
or any organisation. Flashy and colourful
resumes are ok for the industry looking for
creativity, but not in the law industry as they
are looking for future leaders and reliable
employees. So make sure to create a resume that
is short and to the point, this also doesnt
mean that it doesnt have information that is
necessary and brings out one's accomplishments
and characteristics.
3
Resume Title This section is the top part of the
resume and the one which will catch the
attention of the recruiter at once. This includes
the candidate's Name and Contact information-
such as email address and phone number, also
these include address. All information present
here should be accurate and the font should be
also Bold and simple. If one gets this section
wrong then there are high chances that the
application might be discarded at once. So make
sure that the header section stands out among
the rest of the resume. Education
Experience This section should be divided into
two parts which should be understood completely
in order to make a good resume. Firstly, if a
candidate has prior experience in a legal field,
may it be an internship or a job then they
should mention the experience section first and
then mention the educational background. On the
other hand, the candidate who is applying as a
fresher should mention the educational background
first and in an elaborate manner, including
academic accomplishments to make their resume
more appealing to the hiring manager. Mention
Certifications Most recruiters look for
candidates with certifications, the reason behind
this is simple these certification courses
provide in-depth and career-oriented knowledge
about the subject chosen. The purpose of these
legal learning platforms to offer the best online
law certification courses is to reduce the gap
between the learner and the law industry. So
make sure to mention the certifications,
especially the ones related to the particular
field the candidate is applying for. As it will
increase the chances of getting
hired. Description When writing about the work
experience or any other achievements make sure
to mention the things achieved and
accomplishments of the organisation because of
the candidate's contribution and how these
achievements will benefit the organisation that
the candidate is applying for. Also, make sure
these descriptions are concise and clear which
will make the resume good and represent the
candidate in an intellectual
4
manner. Not only in the job description but also
in the certification section make sure to
describe what they have learned and how the
online law certification course they have
completed will add value to the organisation in
future. Skills Now another important section,
not just the skills that are related to the
legal professions and the position that the
candidate is applying for but a recruiter always
looks for certain soft skills such as time
management, team leadership, communication
skills, organisational skills and others. This
will make a candidate more responsible and
qualified for the job position. These skills and
specialities can be described by how one has
implemented them in their life either
professionally or personally and it has
benefited them. One can learn these skills from
many different free online legal courses as they
teach these skills in order to make a candidate
job-ready. Interest As absurd as it sounds,
putting interest in resumes has a significant
effect on making a good resume into a better one.
The interest section shows the personal
characteristics of a candidate as well as it can
be a great discussing point during the face to
face interview. But also a candidate should be
mindful of what they are mentioning because even
though one would mention their personal interest
they should keep it professional. Note that,
make sure to mention the interest which makes a
candidate more productive and self-reliable as
this will have a great effect on the hiring
manager during the selection process. At last,
make sure that the resume should not exceed more
than one or two pages. Also, the most important
information should not be in the last section as
its the key point of the candidates selection.
It is very important to give time and attention
to a resume that it deserves, for all positions
at all levels in all organisations it is
important to have a complete and concise resume.
Creating awareness among law aspirants, many
educational platforms providing online legal
certification courses in India are organising
webinars with top industry experts to give
complete information regarding the proper and
ideal resume that can
5
help them in getting a good job opportunity.Make
sure to take advantage of these opportunities
and upgrade your resume. So next time a
candidate will create a resume before applying
for a job or internship make sure to consider
these tips.
