What Is the Most Effective Type of Lock for A
Safe?

  • If youve made the wise decision to purchase your
first safe to keep your valuable items protected
from theft and fire damage, you might be
wondering what type of lock it should have?
  • To help you decide what type of lock your safe
should have, here are a few pointers
  • A traditional safe with lock and key
  • With this type of lock, the need to try and
remember a code is eliminated. They are simple to
use and a lot less expensive. However, should a
burglar - or even a cunning family member or
friend find the key to your safe, they will
also have access to everything inside your safe.

  • An electronic or digital safe lock
  • These are now the most commonly found types of
locks on safes, and by simply typing in a short
code, you can access its contents. Enabling you
to have an individual code, and being able to
change it whenever you need/want to, the lock
will store the code in its memory bank, even if
    the battery dies completely.
  • That said, these locks do require a little more
upkeep than a more traditional, combination dial
safe lock, and you must remember to change the
    batteries as and when needed.

4
  • A combination safe lock
  • Highly reliable, these locks however, are not
typically the first choice for safes kept in a
commercial setting, as they lack a number of
important security features, and can take longer
to get into than other types of lock. Also,
youll require professional help from a safe
    technician to change the combination.
  • Biometric/fingerprint safe lock
  • Because a safe with a biometric lock can only be
accessed with your unique characteristics, a
burglar (or anyone else) cannot possibly open the
safe unless with force or specialist equipment.
The need to remember a combination or code is
also eliminated. Should you injure your finger,
however, gaining access to the safe could prove
    tricky!

5
  • So, is there a best kind of safe lock?
  • According to the experts, yes a digital safe
lock. Requiring less maintenance and being able
to change the code without the need for a
locksmith, this type of safe lock is considered
    to be the most effective.
  • If youve already purchased a safe and it has a
combination dial lock, why not see if it can be
retrofit with a digital keypad lock for extra
    security and peace of mind?
