1896 US Open
  • Africans and Americans have together played a key
role in the growth of golf, both on and off the
course, from John Shippen to Tiger Woods, Renee
Powell to Charlie Sifford. This timeline
highlights some of the many noteworthy moments in
African-American golf history. Here is the
complete history of how Americans and Africans
made historic contributions to Golf since the
    1896 US Open
  • 1896 US Open At the age of 17, John Shippen,
whose father was an African-American and whose
mother was a Shinnecock Indian, competed in the
second US Open at Shinnecock Hills, where he
    worked as a caddie.

American Black Golf History 1899 to 1950
  • 1899 A dentist in Boston, George Grant, invents
    the current wooden golf tee.
  • 1922 In his hometown of New Orleans, Joseph
Bartholomew begins his career as a golf course
architect by designing a new course at Metairie
Golf Club. However, according to the club's
segregation policy, he is never permitted to play
or even practice on the course.
  • Robert Hawkins hosted his first African-American
competition in 1926. In 1927, he organized
another tournament, and in 1928, he established
the United Golf Associations, which eventually
established a tour for Black golf players who are
not eligible to compete in PGA events.
  • 1930 Pioneers Golf Course was built on April 12,
1930, as the oldest public course in Lincoln
Nebraska, and the surrounding states. This 27
holes golf architecture was built by William
Tucker for the cost of 1500.

    the LPGA Tour in 1963.

    African-American golfer to win a PGA-sanctioned
event. He also won Andy Williams' San Diego
    Invitational in 1970.
