What Type of Stone Masonry Should You Use to
Build Your Home?
2
  • As one of the oldest methods of construction
known to man, masonry has been used to build many
important, unique and historic structures the
world over, and thanks to its durability and
strength, many of them are still standing today.
  • Masonry is described as the art of laying down
different materials, such as brick, stone and
concrete blocks, in a sequence with mortar, to
achieve a uniform element of a buildings design.
  • When it comes to knowing what type of masonry you
should use to build your home, there are a few
different factors to consider when looking at
    each option

3
  • Stone masonry
  • Youd be hard pushed to find a construction
material stronger, more durable and more
resistant to weather than stone. Without
    swelling, bending, warping, splintering and
denting, or being affected by wind, rain, hail,
sleet and snow, its easy to see why stone
masonry is a popular choice for construction
    companies and individuals alike.
  • Brick masonry
  • Using burnt clay bricks, a masonry contractor
will select the right size, position and number
of openings when building a structure, to ensure
it can perform at its optimum.

4
  • Block masonry
  • This category can be divided into two types of
    masonry
  • Solid concrete block masonry
  • A relatively new material, solid concrete block
masonry units are heavy and help to give
stability to a structure. Manufactured in large
sizes, they can be assembled in less time than
brick masonry, making them a cost and time
    effective choice.

5
  • Hollow concrete masonry
  • Requiring less manpower to lift the hollow blocks
and place them at a certain height, and with less
need of steel in RCC structures to support the
weight of solid concrete blocks, hollow concrete
masonry is often used where weight and manpower
is of concern. Commonly used in residential
buildings, schools, churches and other public
buildings, hollow concrete masonry is well suited
for the construction of low cost housing.

6
  • Veneer masonry
  • The masonry of choice for home building and
remodeling projects, veneer masonry gives the
appearance of a solid brick or stone wall while
being more economical and having greater
insulating properties. Used as an addition to
traditional wood frame structures, it can be
placed on concrete block walls and can be used to
cover an entire wall, or made to stop at the
    level of the window sill.

7
  • Composite masonry
  • Composite masonry is when two or more types of
building materials are used in construction, and
its commonly used to improve the appearance of a
building, or to take advantage of available
    materials for economic purposes.
  • Reinforced masonry
  • This construction system involves the use of
steel to reinforce masonry, and bars or mesh are
typically placed in the mortar or in the holes
filled with concrete or grout. This technique
allows for seismic loads and energy dissipation
capacity to be significantly improved, and is
stronger and able to resist lateral loading far
    better than standard masonry.
