How important is occupational therapy
  • Occupational therapy is the science of helping
people to achieve their highest potential and
become their best selves. OTs, help people to
    improve physical, psychological, and social
    well-being. Occupational therapists are
therapists who work with people to help them
improve their functional ability to be as
    independent as possible. Occupational therapists
assess, provide treatments, and teach their
patients how to live life at their highest levels
    of functioning.

1. Physical Health Well-being
  • The ability to carry out daily activities such as
taking a shower, brushing your teeth, or getting
dressed is often determined by the function and
movement of your body. When you have a health
problem or disability, you might need assistance
with tasks that don't require much strength or
mobility. These issues can cause limitations in
the movement or function of your body and can
lead to limitations in your abilities to function
in daily activities. OT can support clients who
have a disability or health problem by making
adaptations in their environment to ensure they
can perform everyday tasks with less burden and
physical stress. For example, a client with
multiple sclerosis may be able to drive to
school, brush their teeth and get dressed all
while being assisted by an OT.

  • Occupational therapy aims to promote the
achievement of well-being and an overall sense of
    personal and social satisfaction through
activity. OT also offers the opportunity to make
meaningful connections with others, as well as
discover and explore self and the environment.

5
2. Emotional Health Well-being
  • Occupational therapy is also important for
clients who are experiencing emotional well-being
concerns. Many of us experience moments of
sadness or stress, but in these moments it is
important to have something to look forward to. A
few times of the year is not enough. OT can help
support individuals and groups in their
activities to increase the enjoyment of life,
maintain a sense of purpose and provide
    opportunities for self-development and
    self-actualization.

6
  • Occupational therapy is designed to help clients
learn effective coping skills. By learning the
skills needed for emotional self-regulation, the
client can work through challenges, increase
their ability to tolerate difficult situations,
and maintain a positive outlook and outlook on
    life.

7
3. Mental Health Well-being
  • When clients reach the age of 18, many are no
longer under the care of a mental health or
social service provider, which means that they
may have to pay for health care or counselling on
their own. The lack of appropriate treatment in
this regard can lead to severe mental illness,
depression, drug, and alcohol abuse. Occupational
therapy can play an important role in a client's
treatment, helping to facilitate recovery. OT
helps to decrease stigma, provide education, and
    provides interventions and strategies for
improving function. Clients with autism, mental
    illness, and intellectual disabilities often
    require more intensive therapy.

4. Spiritual, Cultural Cultural, Identity, etc.
  • Occupational therapy plays a role in helping
people live culturally competent and healthy
lives. Clients can benefit from access to OT
services in a variety of different ways. For
example, they may require occupational therapy
services to manage stress, maintain health and
cope with a medical condition. A client who has
language barriers may benefit from assistance
from an interpreter. When clients are dealing
with traumatic events, OT can help to provide
    therapeutic and educational support.
