How Often Should Modern Art Be Cleaned?
2
Owning art is undeniably rewarding, but it can
also be fraught with anxiety. After all, if you
part with a substantial sum of money for a piece
of art, youll be keen to protect it as much as
possible. Alas, accidents will happen and even
contemporary art can fall foul of flaking paint.
Repair on oil paintings is not exclusively
limited to the work of the great masters of
yesteryear. So, how often should modern art
cleaning be undertaken? Should contemporary art
be cleaned and maintained as standard, or should
you wait for a problem to arise that necessitates
such attention? What even qualifies as modern art
anyway when does the cut off between classic
and contemporary fall? All of these questions,
and more, will be answered.
Lets start with the definition of modern art.
There is not really a time period ascribed to
modern art. The 19th Century may sound like
ancient history, but paintings from 1860 and
beyond could be considered modern art. The
artwork needs to reject some of the more
conservative and traditional attitudes and
approaches to art creation to fall under this
category.

So, having established that date stamping is not
a way to define the needs of modern art cleaning
London based gallery Simon Gillespies restorers
recommend taking a preventative approach.
Initially, this means protecting your art as much
as possible. Just because a painting is
considered modern, it is not necessarily any more
durable than a classic work from one of the past
masters. Keep your art in an appropriate
location, away from extreme temperatures or light
sources, and avoid exposure to contaminants such
as smoke. Naturally, modern art cleaning should
be treated as a priority if there is an outright
problem. Water damage, for example, can be
rectified by a skilled restorer. Time will always
be of the essence in these situations, though. If
you do not spot any immediate needs for flaking
paint repair on oil paintings, it still makes
sense to periodically bring your modern art in
for cleaning in London.
4
This way, an expert art restorer will review the
canvas and identify any potential flaws before
they become problematic. Prevention is always
better than cure when it comes to flaking paint
repair on an oil painting. If you bring your
modern art for cleaning to Londons Simon
Gillespie gallery no less than every 24 months,
any prospective problems will be headed off at
the pass. Source h ttps//amelierichards.medium.
