Title: Prolapse Treatment in Surrey

1
What is a prolapse?
Prolapse is the loss of normal support of the
vagina and/or uterus (womb). Prolapse of the
uterus and/or vaginal walls is a common
condition with up to 11 of women requiring
surgery during their lifetime. Prolapse
generally occurs due to damage to the supporting
structures of the uterus or vagina. Weakening of
the supports can occur during childbirth,
following chronic heavy lifting or straining
(e.g. with constipation), chronic cough,
obe-sity, and as part of the aging process. In
some cases, there may be a genetic weakness of
the supportive tissues

Prolapse Management
I offer laparoscopic and vaginal treatment
options for the management of prolapse including
sacrocolpopexy, hysteropexy, vaginal hysterectomy
and repair and sacrospinous fixation.
General Gynaecology I manage period problems
including heavy, irregular or painful periods,
menopausal problems, pelvic pain, fibroids,
ovarian cysts and polyps. I also provide annual
Well woman checks.

What is a vaginal hysterectomy?This is a
procedure in which the uterus is surgically
removed through the vagina. The operation is
frequently combined with prolapse repairs of the
bladder and/or bowel. There are no ab-dominal or
laparoscopic incisions

What happens during surgery?
Sacrocolpopexy is performed either through an
abdominal inci-sion or key holes (using a
laparoscope or with a surgical ro-bot). Surgery
is done under general anesthesia, which is means
being completely asleep with a tube in your
throat to breathe. The vagina is first freed
from the bladder at the front and the rectum at
the back. A graft made of permanent synthetic
mesh (lightweight material made from woven
polypropylene) is used to cover the front and
the back surfaces of the vagina. The mesh is
then attached to a ligament that runs on the
sacrum (tail bone) as shown in the illustration.
