Introduction
  • E-filing or electronic filing is submitting your
    income tax returns online. There are two ways to
    file your income tax returns. One is the
    conventional offline route. The other way is to
    e-file your return on the internet.
  • Return filing process has been immensely
    simplified by introducing online income tax
    return filing.

Different types of tax return forms
  • Form 26AS In income tax filing, Form 26AS has
    its own importance. This form is an annual
    statement that has all the details of the tax
    credited against the PAN of a taxpayer. You can
    access this form from income tax e filing portal
    of the tax department through your PAN. You can
    refer to your Form 26AS to find out the income on
    which taxes have been deducted along with taxes
    that have been paid by you or deductor on your
    behalf.
  • ITR1 Sahaj Form Be it e-filing or otherwise, ITR
    1, also known as Sahaj, is the simplest of all
    income tax return forms. Its meant for resident
    individuals whose total annual income is below
    ?50 lakhs.

Which ITR Form Should You Fill?

Type of Form Applicability
ITR 1 Resident individuals have income less than ?50 lakhs from salary, pension, other sources, and one house property.
ITR 2 Every income as mentioned in ITR 1 along with capital gains, more than one house property, foreign income/foreign assets. Also applicable if you are an individual director of a company or have had investments from unlisted equity shares.
ITR 3 Every income as mentioned in ITR 2 along with income from business / profession. Also applicable is presumptive income is more than ?50 lakhs.
ITR 4 Applicable for individuals, HUFs, partnership firms (other than LLPs) with total income up to ?50 lakhs and having it from small business or profession. Also applicable for taxpayers opting for presumptive income scheme under section 44AD, 44ADA and 44AE.
ITR 5 Applicable for firms, LLPs, Association of Persons (AOPs), Body of Individuals (BOIs).
ITR 6 Applicable for companies not claiming exemption under section 11.

How to register for itr e-filing
  • Registering for ITR e-filing is a simple process.
    You can do so in the tax departments e filing
    website. Keep your PAN, mobile number and email
    ready, as they are an important part of the
    registration process. To register yourself for
    income tax e-filing
  • Open incometaxindia.gov.in and click on
    Register.
  • Select the user type from the list of options
    available, and click on Continue
  • Enter the details with asterisk mark, as they are
    mandatory. Click on Continue once the details
    are filled.
  • Next, you are required to fill up details such as
    password, mobile number, email id and address.
    The tax department will use your contact details
    to send you SMS/Emails. Also, you need to choose
    two secret questions that would be used in case
    you want to reset the password of your account.
    Click on Continue once you have filled them up.
  • You need to verify your registration to complete
    the process. You will receive a one-time password
    on your mobile number and a verification link on
    your email address. Enter the OTP and click on
    the link to successfully register yourself.
