Title: What is MES

1
What Is MES Software? Some Important Benefits
And Details
2
  • What is MES?
  • According to MESA (Manufacturing Execution System
    Association International),
  • Manufacturing execution systems provide data that
allows for the optimization of production
activities from order entry to finished goods.
  • MES guides, initiates, responds to, and reports
on plant activities as they occur, using current
    and accurate data.
  • Rapid response to changing conditions, combined
with a focus on reducing non-value-added
activities, drives efficient plant operations and
    processes.
  • Through bidirectional communications, MES
    provides mission-critical information about
production activities across the enterprise and
    supply chain.
  • Manufacturing Execution Systems collect
production data from multiple plants and easily
    integrate with equipment, controllers, and
    enterprise business applications.
  • Although MES solutions are typically used as
stand-alone systems, they are increasingly being
    integrated with enterprise resource planning
    (ERP) software.
  • As a result, complete visibility, control, and
    manufacturing optimization are achieved from
order placement to production inception, process
    control, and product output.

A modern Manufacturing Execution System (MES)
captures data that can be analyzed to uncover
flawed processes, providing insights that expose
the hidden factory.
4
  • Why Do Businesses Require a Manufacturing
    Execution System?
  • Many businesses still manually enter data or
distribute work instructions on paper. Most of
them, however, are aware that there is a better
way to organise the flurry of activity on the
    plant floor.
  • MES makes that activity and the underlying data
visible, uses that data to improve how that
activity is done, and makes it repeatable.
  • It connects multiple sites, integrates with
equipment, and improves the effectiveness of
business applications in order to improve
    operational efficiency.
  • MES technology is assisting manufacturers in
reducing cycle times and achieving cost savings
(production does not continue when critical
issues are encountered), while the ability to
improve planning activities is also resulting in
    improved equipment utilisation.
  • These systems also automate many manual
    documentation tasks, reducing deviations and
improving compliance. They are also removing
calculation and review tasks that would normally
necessitate a significant amount of manual
    labour.

5
A Manufacturing Execution System (MES) with a
configurable platform adapts to the users
business without custom code, and has an open SOA
architecture designed for ease of integration to
enterprise applications and shop floor automation.
6
  • The Three Pillars of a MES
  • Making a plan and sticking to it
  • The system calculates your TAKT time based on
    your input production shifts/times, production
goals, and so on. Operators can see real-time
progress on dashboard graphics and know where
they stand at any given time.
  • Enforcing a cyclical process
  • Knowing that your process is being carried out
exactly as specified gives you the ultimate peace
of mind. Every step, from fastening to product
routing, is repeated exactly as you specified.
  • Creating a rich data set
  • Capturing data is one thing being able to act on
that data is what drives improvement initiatives.
Utilize your business intelligence platform to
explore your data set in order to identify and
    resolve hidden inefficiencies.
