Title: Pump selection guide: Best uses of pumps

1
Classification Of Pumps And Their Uses
2
  • A pump is a device that transfers liquid from low
head to high head and is used to increase the
pressure of a liquid. The pump further is
classified into two categories rotodynamic pump
    and positive displacement pump.

3
Classification of Pump
  • Rotodynamic Pump
  • ? Centrifugal pump
  • ? Propeller pump
  • Positive Displacement Pump
  • ? Reciprocating pump
  •            Piston pump
  •             Plunger pump
  •             Diaphragm pump
  • ? Rotary
  •  Gear pump
  •  Vane pump
  •  Lobe pump
  • Screw pump
  • There are 8 HP diesel engine water pumps, which
have 8 HP (Horsepower) engine capacity.
Horsepower is nothing but the unit used for
output power or the rate at which it expends
    mechanical energy.

4
Rotodynamic pump
  • Rotodynamic has two meanings roto means rotating
component, and dynamic means a substance or a
liquid has a high velocity. In Rotodynamic, the
dynamic energy of the liquid is increased. The
velocity of the liquid increases in Rotodynamic
pumps. Further, the velocity is converted into
    pressure energy in another device.
  • This Rotodynamic pump operates on the principle
of the rise in liquid pressure energy by dynamic
action (increasing its velocity) of liquid. This
velocity of the liquid is increased in an
impellerthe velocity of the liquid supplies into
the casing. In the casing, velocity energy
    converts into pressure energy.
  • There are two types of pumps in a Rotodynamic
pump which are centrifugal pump and propeller
    pump.

5
Centrifugal Pump
  • As we all know, centrifugal force increases the
velocity of a liquid in this pump due to the
centrifugal action. In a centrifugal pump, the
fluid transfers from one rotor to another by
rotational energy, these rotors are called
impellers. The life expectancy of centrifugal
pumps is between 5 to 10 years. The centrifugal
pump use to pump water, bases, acids, mild
    liquids, etc.
  • Propeller pump
  • Propeller pumps are designed in a way depending
on conventional rotary impeller design. These
pumps use significant flow volume rates in
various applications, and it has moderate
    requirements of the head.

6
Positive Displacement Pump
  • Positive displacement pumps operate on the
definite quantity of liquid discharged or
supplied from the pump. Due to the positive or
actual displacement of the functional elements
(like plunger, gear, piston, screws, vanes) are
displaced or moved. This process is known as
    actual displacement.
  • Due to this, the actual displacement of the
pressure of the liquid element increases
directly. This process is known as the positive
displacement pump. In positive displacement, we
don't require to increase the velocity or further
    conversion.
  • Positive displacement pumps are further divided
into two types - Reciprocating and Rotary pumps.

7
Reciprocating Pump
  • Reciprocating is a type of motion in which
elements like a piston or other device elements
move to the cylinder's end flow. This process is
known as Reciprocating. In a reciprocating pump,
the piston moves up and down inside the cylinder.
This movement is called reciprocating motion.
  • The reciprocating pump further divides into -
piston pump, plunger pump, Diaphragm pump.
  • Piston and Plunger pump
  • Here the piston pump and plunger pump are
similar the only difference is the plunger
replaces the piston. The difference between
piston and plunger is that piston pumps have a
larger diameter and a small length, whereas the
plunger pump has a higher length and a small
    diameter.
  • Diaphragm pump
  • A diaphragm pump has two ways for the liquids to
discharge. It is a type of positive displacement
pump that uses a mixture of the reciprocating
action of thermoplastic, rubber, or Teflon.
  • Rotary pump
  • Another category in a positive displacement pump
is a Rotary pump. The other pump elements, like
gear, vanes, and lobes screws, are rotary
components. The rotary pump further divides into
four pumps depending on these components (Gear,
vane, lobe, Screw) like Gear pump, Vane pump,
    Lobe pump, and Screw pump.

8
  • Gear pump
  • In a gear pump, two gears are used. With the help
of these gears, the pressure of the liquid
    increases.
  • Vane pump
  • In this pump, the vanes move inside and outside
    the pump.
  • Lobe pump
  • The lobe rotates in a lobe pump. There are many
types of lobe that have three lobes or four
    lobes, or even more.
  • Screw pump
  • In a screw pump, with the help of screws, we
increase the pressure level of the liquid.

9
Uses of Pumps
  • ? Pump water from the bore Wells.
  • ? The energy industry uses Pumping gas, operating
    cooling towers, or pumping oil.
  • ? Pond and aquarium filtering uses a Pump.
  • ?  8 HP Diesel Engine Water Pumps Manufacture
mainly create pumps used to lift mud and water
    efficiently.
  • ? For liquid injection and water-cooling purposes
in the Automobile industry, they use pumps.
  • ? To recycle wastewater, paper, pulp, etc., in
the chemical industry, they use pumps.
  • ? In wastewater treatment plants, to recycle
    wastewater, they use pumps.
  • ? For dewatering sludge, the industry uses pumps.
  • ? To measure chemical additives in liquids, the
    industry uses pumps.
  • ? Pumps are used for mining and are widely spread
in the usage of mineral applications.
  • ? Pumps have demand or increase demand
significantly in paper industries because the
production in the paper industry is
    non-stoppable.

10
Conclusion
  • In this article, we have discussed the
classification of pumps and their uses of pumps.
We hope you have understood the basics of pump
classification and the usage of pumps in various
fields. Thus, the applications of pipes are
    widespread in many industries.
