  • Most recipes were prepared from scratch in the
1940s, and the average family meal took 150
minutes to cook. Now, cooked meals are made in
around 30 minutes and normally have at least two
    main dishes.
  • However, with less time available, people are
turning to ready-to-eat meals that dont take
more than 10 minutes to prepare. The ready-to-eat
meals available at your nearest supermarket are
not just junk food. Consumers now want more than
just fast, low-cost meals, which has resulted in
companies providing healthy and even vegan
    meals.

Factors That Influence The Growth Ready-to-eat
Meals
  • Rapid urban growth / fast-paced activities
  • More people are entering the labour force.
  • Trends in market patterns / design / style
  • Increasing drive to eat healthier and adopt
    healthy behaviours (less fast food)

The Difference Between Ready-to-Cook and
Ready-to-Eat?
  • Ready-to-eat foods are really just ready to eat,
with no preparation, heating, or cooking needed.
Deli meats, cheese, prepared wraps, and salads
are only a few examples. Foods prepared with the
intention of being heated/cooked to a precise
internal core temperature by refrigerator, oven,
or stovetop, such as frozen pizza, certain frozen
    vegetables, frozen microwavable dinners, or
ready-to-bake cookie dough, are examples of
ready-to-cook foods. According to CMP, these
    temperatures and cooking instructions are
labelled on food labels for customer comfort, but
    they are often overlooked.

The Difference Between Ready-to-Cook and
Ready-to-Eat?
  • When customers buy ready-to-cook foods as if they
were ready-to-eat, they bypass a critical phase
in food safety that is meant to destroy bacteria.
Consumers often believe that since food has been
frozen, all pathogens and bacteria present have
been destroyed. The reality is that freezing
deactivates these bacteria, but once thawed, they
become active again. Active microbes will
replicate in the same manner as they can on fresh
    produce, possibly causing food contamination.
Companies that process ready-to-cook meals are
urging us to read the labels and correctly cook
frozen food to ensure bacteria and possible
    parasites are destroyed.

  • What are your cooking habits? Are you a
traditionalist who prepares all of your food from
scratch, or have you succumbed to the growing
wave of ready-to-cook and ready-to-eat meals from
    a package?
  • If youre looking for the best ready-to-eat
meals that you can order online, consider
