3
introduction
  • UI, or intrauterine insemination, is a relatively
simple fertility treatment. It may be done with
or without fertility drugs. The procedure itself
involves transferring semen that has been washed
and concentrated directly into the uterus via a
thin catheter. IUI is done around the time of
ovulation or in conjunction with fertility drugs
to maximize the likelihood of conception.

4
When It's Used
  • Cycles of IUI may be recommended to treat any of
    the following infertility situations
  • Hostile cervical mucus
  • If a sperm donor is being used
  • If sexual pain makes intercourse not possible
  • If treatment with fertility drugs alone is not
    successful
  • Male infertility
  • Unexplained infertility

5
Procedure
  • Ovarian Stimulation
  • While IUI can be conducted in a natural cycle, it
can also be done in conjunction with ovarian
    hyper-stimulation. Where medication is provided
to increase the growth of follicles, so that they
    can grow into eggs.
  • Follicular Growth Monitoring
  • At regular intervals, follicular growth is
monitored through ultrasound to check if the
follicles have reached the required size.
  • Semen Collection
  • Sperm is collected from the male partner and
washed in a laboratory to get rid of the
seminal fluid, which can cause severe cramping in
    women.
  • IUI
  • Done around the time of ovulation for best
results, the whole process takes about 90 minutes
to complete, but the process of insemination
itself is a few minutes long. Using a soft narrow
silicone catheter, the washed semen is placed in
the uterine cavity of the woman, improving the
    chances of fertilization.

6
Risks
  • IUI is a relatively low-risk procedure. There is
a very small risk of infection. Some of the
biggest risks come from the fertility drugs used.
If youre using gonadotropins, you may be at risk
for having a multiple pregnancy or developing
    ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS).

7
Success Rates
  • 55.6 for cervical factor infertility
  • 47.4 for anovulation (problems with ovulation)

  • 35.1 for unexplained infertility
  • 13.4 for asthenospermia (poor sperm motility)
  • 10.7 for endometriosis
