A CREATIVE REPRESENTATIONS OF PERCEPTIONS,
CONSTRUCT, PHILOSOPHIES AND THEORIES OF HUMAN
DEVELOPMENT
3
human development in socio-cultural context
  • Socio-cultural context can be referred to as an
immediate social and physical setting in which
people live in and where something TAKES PLACE OR
    DEVELOPS.
  • IN GENERAL, HUMAN DEVELOPMENT IS ALL ABOUT OUR
FREEDOM AS HUMAN, FOR INDIVIDUAL TO REALIZE the
full potential of every human life of all lives
in every corner of the world-now and in the
    future.
  • Many a times, individuals view human development
as maximizing freedoms so that every person can
    pursue choices that they value.
  • ADD SOME MORE INFORMATION IN THIS SLIDE

WESTERN THEORIES
  • Piagets theory of constructivism
  • was a philosopher in Switzerland and a natural
    scientist
  • this scientist was well-known for the work by
studying cognitive development and learning the
theories that encompasses his view on genetic
    epistemology (1964-1972)
  • Piagets theory focuses on constructivism on
which he argues that people produce knowledge and
form meaning based on their own experiences and
how the learning actually occurs and not on what
    influences learning.
  • IN the year (1896-1980) he developed a theory
that concerns the structural development of mind
    through four major stages Sensorimotor,
    pre-operatory representation, concrete operations
    and formal operations.

  • ERIK ERIKSONS neo-psychoanalytic THEORY
    CHILDHOOD DIMENSIONS REFLECTIONS
  • ERIKSON WAS AN EGO PSYCHOLOGIST THAT DEVELOPED
ONE OF THE MOST POPULAR AND INFLUENTIAL
    THEORIESOF DEVELOPMENT.
  • Erikson's theory is about psychosocial
development that helps an individual to predict,
evaluate and interpret situations and behaviors
of people and involves changes that not only in
childrens overt behavior but also in their
    social cognition
  • This theory also allows a person to know the ways
on how an individual should react and intervene
with clients who have certain backgrounds, issues
    or goals
  • ACCORDING TO ERIKSONS VIEW, THESE CONFLICTS ARE
CENTERED ON EITHER DEVELOPING A PSYCHOLOGICAL
QUALITY OR FAILING TO DEVELOP THAT QUALITY
    (CHERRY, 2020)

HUMAN DEVELOPMENT IN A I-TAUKEI PERSPECTIVE
  • IN THE I-TAUKEI CULTURE, HUMAN DEVELOPMENT IS A
PROCESS THAT EVERY INDIVIDUALS ARE RESPONSIBLE
FOR AND ALL HAS A ROLE TO PLAY IN AN UPBRINGING
OF A HUMAN BEING FROM INFANCY TO MATURITY AGE.
  • IN OUR COMMUNITY, WE DO THINGS COLLECTIVELY AND
TOGETHER AND HELP EACH OTHER WITH WHAT WE CAN
CONTRIBUTE FOR AN UPBRINGING OF THAT CHILD.
  • OUR CULTURE AND TRADITIONS ARE SUCH THAT MAJORITY
HOUSEHOLDS IN THE PACIFIC LIVED WITH EXTENDED
FAMILY BECAUSE OF THE SPIRIT OF TOGETHERNESS AND
THE LOVE THAT WE HAVE FOR OUR LOVED ONES THAT
    MAKES US AS SUCH.
  • AS A CHILD, WHETHER IT BE A FIJIAN OR PACIFIC
ISLANDER, ARE NOT ONLY BEEN TAUGHT FROM THEIR
PARENTS BUT FROM GRANDPARENTS, RELATIVES AND THE
    COMMUNITY AS A WHOLE.

9
I-TAUKEI COMMUNITY
  • MAJORITY OF US HUMAN BEINGS LEARN AND DEVELOPED
QUICKLY BY THE INFLUENCE AND IMPACTS THAT OUR
SURROUNDINGS HAVE ON OUR LIVES WHETHER IT BE
    SPIRITUALLY, PHYSICALLY OR MENTALLY.
  • OZER (2004) EMPHASIZED THAT THE PERCEPTUAL,
ATTENTION AND MEMORY CAPACITIES OF CHILDREN ARE
TRANSFORMED BY VITAL COGNITIVE TOOLS PROVIDED BY
    CUKTURE, HISTORY, SOCIAL CONTEXT, TRADITIONS,
    LANGUAGE AND RELIGION
  • AS A PACIFIC ISLANDER, OUR CULTURE, TRADITION,
RELIGION AND SOCIAL UPBRINGING DEFINES OUR
    IDENTITY, BACKGROUNDS AND LIFESTYLE
  • THEREFORE, WE TEND TO WORK TOGETHER BECAUSE OF
THE LOVE AND AFFECTION THAT PACIFIC ISLANDER HAVE
DOES NOT WANT THEIR LOVED ONES TO BE LEFT BEHIND
INSTEAD MAKE AND HELP THEM TO BE SUCCESSFUL.

10
CURRENT PERSPECTIVE ON HUMAN DEVELOPMENT
  • John Locke and jean Jacques Rousseau focuses on
early modern social contract theorists which both
promotes a reason and freedom as essential
    components of political societies.
  • In this era, education is the most important
aspects in human development especially for a
    child as they grow up.
  • as quoted by john Locke the well educating of
their children is so much the duty and concern of
parents, and the welfare and prosperity of the
nation so much depends on it .
  • Lockes method of education is meant to be
observed by parents even from the time a child Is
in the cradle, long before the teaching that
    comes from books (Locke, 1975).
  • Therefore, parents should cherish curiosity in
their children as a positive appetite and as
education is an important current perspective of
human development, children would need both
mental and physical habits to aim for his own
    perfection.

Understanding. Edited by Peter H. Nidditch. New

  • The educational methods of Rousseau and Locke
emphasize either nurture or nature, based on
different views of inclinations and on varying
aims for the future of the educated child (Locke,
1823). Locke, J. 1823. The Works of John Locke.
London Printed for T. Tegg (10 volumes).
  • As Locke's view for a child to be trained to
become an individual of action in society, while
Rousseau's view for a child to be trained to lead
the simple natural life of beauty and simplicity
    slightly outside of society.
  • In this modern time, children are most of the
time being educated through the use of technology
by accessing all sorts of websites to learn from
as majority of the education platform are offered
online and since children nowadays are familiar
with the use of technology and resources it makes
it easier for them to access internet.
  • Hence, it is vital for parents to nurture to
equip children with values, knowledge and skills
that they need to acquire and remind them the
importance of education as it will help them to
develop themselves to achieve greater things and
    become successful in the future.
