Five Fun Facts about Air Conditioning That Will
Surprise You
  • Most people are lucky enough to spend the long
days of summer without any discomfort with the
air conditioning system. However, most people are
not aware of the interesting history behind the
functioning of the AC. The air conditioners have
not been like they are today. The modern systems
are highly advanced with impeccable features to
make homes and offices cool. Today, you require
    hiring an air conditioning servicefor
    installation, maintenance, and repair.

  • Knowing a few fun facts about the AC systems is
as intriguing as finding more about the
reliability of an air conditioning service. Here
are a few facts you should know.
  • 1.     The idea behind the discovery of the AC
system was not the comfort. Willis Carrier was
the person behind the invention of the modern AC
in 1902 for a publishing company in New York when
there were issues with the paper expansion, ink
control, and contraction due to fluctuating
levels of humidity. Therefore, the original idea
behind the invention of the AC system was the
    protection of paper and ink.
  •  During the introduction of the first AC systems,
the measurement of the output settings was in Ice
Power, which meant the requirement of blocks of
ice to produce the cooling effect. Today, people
are familiar with the AC units.
  • 2.     The ventilation systems of the previous
times were to ventilate the corpses.
Incidentally, the first system came about in 1889
in the dissection rooms of the Cornell University
and the New York Stock Exchange in 1903. The
first fully AC home was in a mansion of
Minneapolis in 1913 by Charles Gates.
Unfortunately, the man died before he could
experience the cooling effect of the system.
  • The AC system was behind the term Summer
Blockbuster and one of the first businesses to
leverage the technology of air conditioning
during the early 20th century were the movie
theatres. In 1930, people went to the theatres
not to enjoy films but to experience the cooling
effect of the AC unit during the summer months.
Since then, the term Summer Blockbuster became
    familiar in the households.

  • 3.     In the 1940s all people needed was pay
350 for the window air conditioner and at
present, you can expect to pay around 3000 to
4000 for buying a window AC. The vast difference
of the prices can make you feel like turning the
time back to the past. Before the discovery of
the air conditioning system, schools were not the
only places that stopped functioning during the
summer, but the government offices also stopped
working due to the uncomfortable and warm
    weather.
  • According to history, the measurement of the
modern AC was about seven feet in height ad six
feet wide, which makes it pretty large for homes,
and one of the reasons why several homes did not
    have ACs until 1970.
  • 4       The electric fan was the predecessor of
the modern AC machine. Although the fans did not
do much to create a cooling effect, they could
produce the wind chill effect by reducing the
    body temperature.
  • 5       The air conditioners became a status
symbol after World War II, and the window units
became so popular that about one million units
    were sold in 1953.
  • The fun facts about ACs can be an eye-opener for
many people who are aware of modern technology
and look forward to the latest cooling units in
    their homes.
