  • In the UK, self-defence is permitted, with the
caveat that no more than reasonable force is
being used. This may be confusing but two recent
cases clearly highlight what is unreasonable and
what is not. Do you want to learn more? Visit
    fight-flight-freeze.
  • Both cases are, in their own way, shocking.
Returning from a night out, Munir Hussein and his
father were arrested and tied up as their house
was ransacked. If they did not comply the
burglars tried to destroy the children. The
warning was finally raised, and the burglars fled
screaming. Hussein and his brother pursued one of
the criminals and beat him badly, breaking a
cricket bat into three pieces while doing so!
  • Omari Roberts, in another instance, arrived home
for lunch to find two burglars. In a fight for
his life he ended up stabbing one in the leg and
    killing the other.
  • Hussein went to jail but was released on appeal
whereas Roberts had dropped all charges when he
was about to begin his trial. Put clearly Roberts
used the energy needed to protect himself when
Hussein didn't even protect himself when he
    conducted the burglar assault.

  • The freeze, fight or flight answer has kicked in
in serious circumstances like these mentioned.
Hardwired this reaction is an important
evolutionary process to result in survival. If
the danger is detected, the powerful combination
of endocrine and neural activity produced allows
a person ready to use the correct response
freeze, battle, escape! Have a look at
fight-flight to get more info on this.
  • The trouble is that the body does not understand
reasonable force, it is in mode of survival. And
the must live. An emotional response to the
threat will help prepare for the struggle, if
that is the selected answer. Adrenaline and
cortisol flood the system which poses a problem
    with logical judgement.

  • The two perpetrators are easy to empathize with.
They had invaded their homes and their lives were
in danger, and perhaps even those of their loved
ones. Of necessity, they were within their
privileges to protect themselves. The irony is
that the case ending in the perpetrator's death
    was considered self defense.
  • Those issues are applicable to all martial
    artists.
  • Firstly, we must be confident that we recognize
    fair force
  • Secondly, when under attack we need to be able to
    work within those constraints
  • Third, we need to understand and incorporate
    stress response in our training

5
  • Self-defense experts often refer to the response
to stress as something to overcome in a situation
of self-defence. I like to think of it as an
educable device. It is, after all, an
evolutionary mechanism built to bring about
survival. Overcoming sabre tooth tigers is in
position, can we sure use it in our training? If
