The Importance of Sleep
The world today is brimming with options,
alternates, and substitutes. In this world full
of countless options, we have come to a point
where we believe that caffeine and power naps can
substitute restful sleep. Boy, are we wrong!
There have been many articles in the newspapers,
web blogs, and in medical journals stressing and
reiterating the importance of sleep for years.
This simple act of lying still with closed eyes
through the night can contribute to longevity,
higher levels of brain activity, and holistic
well-being. Many Serious Diseases Problems are
caused due lack of sleep.
A good nights sleep is extremely important for
our wellbeing. When we are well-rested, we feel
energetic, fresh, and active, which helps us
perform our jobs and daily tasks
efficiently. Regardless of our age, getting
enough sleep is a precursor to a healthy and long
life. Although the amount of sleep we need may
vary by age or between individuals, but we cannot
ignore its importance.

Why do we need to sleep enough?
A good nights sleep helps us in more ways than
we can imagine. Some of the most crucial
functions that occur while we are asleep
include Revitalization When we are unwell, we
are recommended rest. As we spend more time
sleeping while unwell, our body uses this time to
speed up the healing process that helps us get
better faster. Of all the functions that occur
during sleep, tissue repair, reorganization of
memory and relaxation of the heart muscle due to
lowered heart rate are most important. The result
of these activities is an increased ability to
fight diseases and speedy healing. These
functions also continue during days when we are
well and help us feel relaxed and revitalized
when we wake up.
Recognition Our life is a collection of
learnings, experiences, and memories. As we
continue to add to these, our brain uses the time
we spend sleeping to reorganize and index these
memories and experiences so we can easily
recollect them when needed. For example, the
tasks we perform daily use the skills we learned
years ago in school. Sleeping initiates the
process of moving things from our short-term
memory to our long-term memory.
Regulation Sleep performs another important task
weight regulation. As our body relaxes while we
sleep, it also prevents overeating, binging and
many other activities that might trigger
unnecessary weight gain sleeping suppresses the
hormones responsible for controlling our urge to
eat, we end up being fitter.

What happens when we do not sleep enough?
  • A lot is dependent on sleep. The lack of sleep
affects our behaviour, our cognitive ability, and
our general wellbeing. These health conditions
are inter-related, and one may also give rise to
another or become the causal factor for another
condition. For example, the lack of sleep
increases anxiety, which is a causal factor for
hypertension which in turn enhances the
  • individuals risk for heart disease.

  • Sleep Apnea
  • For millennia, we have considered snoring to be a
definitive sign that a person is asleep. This is
  • sadly not so. Snoring might be the reason for
many health risks that we attribute to the lack
of sleep today. Snoring is a symptom of a
serious condition known as Sleep Apnea. Sleep
Apnea is a Sleep Apnea. Sleep Apnea is a sleep
disorder in which breathing repeatedly stops and
starts. Often overlooked as just snoring, this
condition is easily addressable using medical
    investigation and home care.

Some major health risks caused by sleep apnea
and the lack of sleep include
High blood pressure and heart disease Sleep is a
restorative activity. It promotes tissue repair
and relaxation. The heart is a muscle that runs
constantly, without stopping. A good nights
sleep decreases our heart rate, allowing the
heart muscle to work slower than it does during
the day, enhancing its longevity. This results
in lowered blood pressure and a significantly
lowered risk of heart disease. Diabetes and
Obesity Not sleeping enough causes the hormonal
balance in our body to get disturbed. This causes
the balance between the hormones that trigger
satiety (the feeling of being full) to get
disturbed, resulting in overeating and weight
gain. This further increases the amount of fat in
our body and affects insulin production, which
enhances the risk of Type-2 diabetes. Anxiety
and Mental Ability With good sleep comes good
memory management. A rested mind will remember
things faster, directly resulting in better
performance in every task. Sleep directly affects
our mood, mental health, and stress levels by
reducing anxiety. Individuals that are sleep
deprived tend to be irritable, perform worse
than others and are anxious throughout the day.
These conditions affect their performance at the
workplace and affect their social and
interpersonal skills, which in turn affects
social acceptance, employability, and
productivity. A good nights sleep can help us
lead healthier, better lives. Using innovative
methods and ground-breaking technology, Sanrai
