Filter Data in Tableau
  • Data can be organized and simplified by using
    various techniques in Tableau.
  • The filters can be applied in a worksheet to
restrict the number of records present in a
dataset. Various types of filters are used in
Tableau Desktop based on different purposes.

  • Types of Filters
  • The name of filter types are sorted based on the
    order of execution in Tableau.
  • Extract Filters
  • Data Source Filters
  • Context Filters
  • Dimension Filters
  • Measure Filters

  • Extract Filters
  • Extract filters are used to filter the extracted
data from data source. This filter is utilized
only if the user extracts the data from data
    source.
  • Once the text file is connected to Tableau, you
can see the live and extract option in the top
right corner of data source tab. Live Connection
directly connects to a data source.
  • Extract connection extracts the data from data
source and creates a local copy in Tableau
    repository.

  • Data Source Filters
  • Filter Data from Data Sources. Version 2019.1
    Applies to Tableau Desktop.
  • You can create filters on a data source, thereby
reducing the amount of data in the data source.

  • Context Filters
  • Improves performance - If you set a lot of
filters or have a large data source, the queries
    can be slow.
  • Creates a dependent numerical or top N filter -
You can set a context filter to include only the
data of interest, and then set a numerical or a
    top N filter.

  • Dimension Filters
  • Tableau provides the ability to filter individual
views or even entire data sources on dimensions,
    measures, or sets.
  • The first, and most basic way to filter out marks
on a view, is to select the marks, and then
choose to keep or exclude them.

  • Measure Filters
  • Filtering is the process of removing certain
values or range of values from a result set.
  • Tableau filtering feature allows both simple
scenarios using field values as well as advanced
    calculation or context-based filters.
  • Filter Measures are the filters applied on
    the measure fields.
