• The proposed citizenship legislation of the
  Government is will be introduced in the
  Parliament in the present Spring.
• The Government consults
• The Government is in consultation regarding its
  major components. Moreover, presently there is no
  time frame on the date of introducing the Bill in
  the Parliament. A Spokesperson of Greens Senator
  Nick McKim says that the Government is not having
  the sufficient numbers to pass the Bill in the
  Senate. He said in case of Governmental delay,
  his party would take measures to remove it from
  the notice paper. The Greens are unhappy that the
  legislation is remaining on notice paper and will
  also strike off the legislation from the notice
  paper if the government uses it for posturing.

• The first draft
• The first draft Bill of the Governments made
  migrants to wait for four years as PRs before
  they applied for citizenship. Additionally there
  was a requirement of proving proficiency in
  English. The opposition had forced the removal of
  Bill, from notice board in Oct 2017, after the
  lower house passed it. They were unhappy,
  regarding the new requirement of general
  residence for PRs. There was an increase from one
  year, and it also had an English test for
  immigrants. The Government came with a soft
  stand, and now the English test will be only a
  primary school-level test of conversation. It
  makes good sense for people to know English as
  it is a positive thing, and helps in the
  participation in the Australian way of life.
• Some developments
• The Citizenship Legislation Amendment Bill of
  Australia was removed from notice paper in Senate
  last year. The Labor and Greens oppose the
  English language test.  It is not proper to test
  people for English because many have made
  extraordinary contribution even though they did
  not succeed in a primary level test.

• The party expressed opposition to delay of
  migrants, for applying to get citizenship.
  Moreover, the legislation gives powers to the
  minister, regarding overturning decisions of the
  Administrative Appeals Tribunal in Australian
  citizenship. Thus Government will need the
  support of all the cross bench senators, for
  passing the changes in the Senate.
